Stayed on Omonia Square a few years ago. It's very central and is about 15 minutes walk from the Acropolis. There have a decent Metro system which is handy when it's too hot to walk in mid-summer, it was almost 40 degrees when we were there.

There are loads of restaurants etc. around Omonia Square. Just watch out for the Kamikaze taxi drivers!

anywhere near the Acropolis is fine, as the other poster said athens has a decent metro system so getting around town is no problem. Syntagma Square is probably the main area of town, from there the metro goes directly to the airport, there are plenty of hotels in that area, its easy to walk to the majority of sites from Syntagma Square too, the metro will bring you to the ferry port (if a daytrip to the islands is on the cards) and the lightrail from the port then brings you to the beaches just east of the city
