Gmail Chat List

Hey everyone, I hope this is the right forum for this quick question.

I had to email a friend of a friend when organising a party and we exchanged a few mails, both of us having Gmail accounts.

I noticed his name and green light in my chat window just now, and it seems to have happened automatically. I didn't invite him to chat, nor he me.

Now, I hardly know this guy and I don't really like him. I don't like him knowing when I'm online or not, and when a chat window pops up I don't like to just ignore anyone. Especially not someone who's a good friend with a good friend!

What I want to know is, can I make it invisible to him if I'm online, or 'un-chatlist' him in some way? I don't want to be 'invisible' to all my other Gmail contacts, just get me off his chatlist without having to block him, or appearing too rude.

Any ideas or solutions are very welcome.:)

Hey, I had this problem, well someone appearing online in my chat list even though I don't really know them.

First thing to do is go into settings, and deselect 'Auto-add suggested contacts'.

You can edit (remove) people from appearing online in your chat list by going into contacts, select the one you want to delete, then beside 'Show in chat list', select the option you want (i.e. never), then return to your inbox and that contact should be removed from chat!

    Thanks!:)

Do you know if that will remove my visibility from his chat-list though? I don't care if he's online or not, just that he can see when I am!

edit:I just did as you suggested and saw the option to not allow him to see me. (I feel foolish I didn't work this out before!) Thanks again.:)

Click on the contact and select block contact, wont stop you getting his emails but he wont see when your online.
