Anyone know what happens if I buy this car, which was due to have its first NCT in May I believe, and I get stopped by the Guards? As it stands, someone said the waiting list for NCT is now 6 months????

Appreciate the help, as I need to sort this problem out asap before travel abroad!

    Thanks

Just book a test and you will be grant. Make sure you leave the confirmation letter in the car.
Most guards will let you on your way if you can prove you have an appointment.
Very often spots can become available next week or so, so check with them regularly to reschedule.

Got a link? It's in the dealer's interest to have a new NCT for the car, so why have they not bothered? There is no waiting list if you bother to check for a cancellation. Suspicious imo.

Confab - Very good point. Thank you. I will double check why they didn't do it sooner, altho it appeared he didn't know when this year the car was due for first NCT (its a 06), so maybe a bit lazy of him.....anyway, of course going on the cancellation list is obvious, just hope someone cancells within 5 days!!! I only have 2 wks to get the show on the road for a trip to the UK...:o
    Maybe just worrying over nothing.

CaraFawn - thanks for that. Good tip to leave letter of appointment in the car. It's not my fault at the end of the day that the waiting lists are so long:rolleyes:

    Thanks again.

Make sure your insurance company will cover you. Somebody posting recently had a problem where the insurance (Quinn ??) refused to cover car without an NCT.

Wow, can't believe they can do that, considering the waiting list for NCT that is....

OP, just a warning... DO NOT buy that car or hand over any money before you are handed an NCT cert that says 'Passed'. You may well be left with large bills to get the car through the NCT and a dealer who says 'You accepted the car without an NCT, so you have no comeback by law'. Also make sure the car is checked by a mechanic who is not recommended by the dealer.

You've been warned. Personally I'd run a mile when I hear that the dealer hasn't bothered to NCT his stock. A careless attitude means he won't be very helpful if something goes wrong.

Thanks Confab, This is a main dealer, and he did state he would do the NCT and he never said it would take so long, so maybe dealers have a way of getting cars tested quickly to sell rather than leaving customers waiting around weeks....

Have no intention of taking car without having it tested first anyway. Or having something on paper saying Garage takes full responsibility of costs if any....

And I don't want to run a mile - I'd rather take the new car and drive it but will just have to be patient.:)

Why start a new thread, when it's relevant here. It's better to keep this together.

    Merged.

No, but they do have people employed during the day and can generally find one of them to bring a car over for any random cancellation that occurs. Unlike a private individual.

Thats definately handy, but I guess only time will tell.

I will know more tomorow morning when I ring the dealer again........

Im beginning to think I shouldn't have bothered so close to the hols, but was thinking of saving on petrol by getting a diesel.........

Keep wondering, cause I went to my dealer, bought a car and he got an appointment with the NCT within a week. Passed first time of course. You and me have to leave a E50 note on the seat for that. :p

Well, just to update - this is a closed case. Car is sold already (my own fault as I had already told the dealer no, that he was asking too much....)

    Lesson learnt.

    Thanks again for yer help.

    Is this for real?

I tried to book a test 2 weeks ago and it's for the 2nd of August or something!

    Hi
Yes, it's definitely true. I brought my car for NCT last Friday, June 11th, having made the appointment back in April. Just before I brought it, I read the brochure which they sent me with the confirmation letter. On it, they have a customer charter which states that if you wait for longer than 4 weeks for an appointment then the test is free.
I asked about it when I brought the car on Friday, and was told it was true. However, you do still have to pay at the time and then claim the money back. The girl in my NCT centre gave me a form to fill in, and told me to post it in along with my receipt of payment and I would be refunded.
