I would like to buy a projecter for my husbands birthday but i have no idea where to start. My budget is 800ish, i would need a screen and speakers as well.

can anyone suggest some reliable brands that are reasonably priced and what else i might need to get for him along with the projecter:confused:

I am sure others will be along shortly with specific recommendations but can I ask you a question. I assume he must have said something to you about a wanting a projector. If it was only in the broadest terms that he talked about this, like just saying, "I'd love one of those Projector things to watch stuff on a big screen". Well then you are good to go in terms of getting a projector and him being happy with whatever you got. However, if he discussed it in more specific terms like, his mate so and so has this great Panasonic projector or he showed you a picture of a projector in a magazine, well in that case although he may appreciate the lovely surprise, he may have prefered if you handed him a card with a cheque in it or a Projector purchase permission slip. ie. if he has something specific in mind he will be more thrilled with the permission slip from the family CFO (Chief Financial officer) ie You :D than a projector loveling wrapped as a suprise for him but which is the 'Wrong' projector.

Remember, while for many women the thoughts of being handed a bundle of notes and told, "Buy yourself something nice love" is the most lazy and unromantic thing a man could do, and I as a man can would agree with them. I also know as a man that most blokes while knowing the wad of cash is not the done thing when giving gifts to a woman, that is the very thing that most men prefer when receiving gifts. I also know from the women in my own family, that when its a small thing they want the romantic gift with some thought put into it but when it comes to expensive things they would be like men. ie. They'd prefer the permission slip or the wedge of cash so they can get the Prada HB they really want than get a lovely expensive HB but which isn't the Prada they wanted.

I make most of my purchases from www.projectorpoint.co.uk and find them very informative, have a breeze through their website to get a feel for what you could get.
I recommend avoiding DLP projectors due to the 'rainbow effect'.
You will probably find that €800 for a PJ, screen, speakers will result in a shortfall on quality. You never asked for it but you'll need a suitable amplifer (to drive the speakers) too.

This is Bad Advice! DLP Home Theatre projectors are much better value than LCD projectors and give more depth to the picture making the projected image look much better to the eye with stronger colors. See Here

Please read the following tread about "Rainbow Effect"

I have an entry level DLP home theatre projector and now and again I might see a rainbow, mostly in "Black & White" scenes. It does not bother me at all. A very small percentage of people are highly sensitive to rainbows and can not watch movies on DLP projectors. I have shown my projector "DLP" to 100's of people an no one complained. High end DLP projectors show NO Rainbows as they have a 4X or 5X color wheel speed which virtually elliminated rainbows. Rainbows we an issue 3-4years back but modern DLP's have addressed this.

The best value home theatre projector on the market "IMO" is the Vivitek H1080 Full HD projector. Available in dublin for under €1000 with a 3 year warranty.

If this is too pricey then look at one of the entry level 720p projectors like the BenQ W600 or the Optoma HD66?

The spec to follow is 720p or 1080p, 1600 lumens or above - 3000:1 contrast ratio or above (best 5000:1), HDMI connection.

thanks for the advise, I have considered the option of taking him out to buy one rather than getting him one and him not realy liking it but this feels like the easy way out. If i cant confidently choose one I will probably end up doing this.

Thanks for the advise, I checked out the links you posted it helped a great deal. I would like to look at getting the projecter you suggested vivitek H1080 but im unable to find anywhere in Ireland that sells it. I found it on http://www.projectorpoint.co.uk/home-cinema-projectors.htm for £820, can you tell me what place in Dublin sells it?
