Was playing in my club comp yesterday and when teeing off on the 16th, drove the ball into trees. When i arrived to the ball, the players on the hole next to this one had put my ball up on a tee.
Whats the ruling on this? Play it as it lies or free drop?
The guys i was playing with said that i had to play it as it lies. Were thay right??

Mmmm........interesting position to be in !! I would have thought that the person who picked it would have to drop it where he picked it up, and then you play on as usual, but I could be wrong !

    Rule 18-4:
18-4. By Fellow-Competitor, Caddie or Equipment in Stroke Play
If a fellow-competitor, his caddie or his equipment moves the player’s ball,
touches it or causes it to move, there is no penalty. If the ball is moved,
    it must be replaced.

Problem was that the other players had moved on.

Rule 18 ... ball moved by outside agency. Put the ball back without penalty. If you don't put it back you incur a two stroke penalty for playing from the wrong spot.

Im not trying to contradict your answer but how do i know where the ball had landed seeing that it had gone into the trees.
Also, what penalty should the group in front get for interfering with my ball?

A bit OT, but why the hell would they do that?

The ball should be played where it originally came to rest, which was not on top of a tee peg.

Everyone should have a copy of the Rules Book in his/her bag.

Just got a rules email there and had to laugh

What about the situation where a player repairs a spike mark after they have completed the hole in order to benefit a fellow competitor who still has to putt out? Well, Decision 13-2/36 makes it clear that not only does the person who repaired the spike mark incur a penalty of two strokes but, if the player who benefitted from this action tacitly agreed to it, then they are penalised as well. The correct action by the player who still has to putt out is for them to try and stop the repair being made. If they are too late, then they should try and recreate the spike mark, so as to ensure that they are not penalised, although the player making the repair is. Here is the wording of Decision 1-2/36.

I'd say the greenkeepers would love that :D
