I want to open an online shop. I will have about 30 different products to sell. The problem is I an completely useless when it comes to technology. I dont know where to start or what to do! What is the process I would have to go through to get my shop up and running?

    Any help would be great!

    Hi Juma,

Congrats on getting ready to take your business idea online!

Once you get your domain and hosting sorted have a look at:

    magentocommerce.com
    zen-cart.com
    cs-cart.com

These packages are great 'out of the box' solutions for getting your products loaded and online. There are extensive support forums for all of the above and with a bit of elbow grease you could have a basic version of your shop up and running over the weekend.

A lot of people are trying their hand at online shops. Most fail.

Research, research, research. Depending on the type of shop, you may be entering a market that is saturated and highly competitive. Perhaps you are targetting a niche market, if so it may be a bit easier.

You could pump lots of money and time into an online shop and even if it looks good getting customers to the shop will be the biggest difficulty.

What will set you out from your competitors?
The most important questions is how are you going to get people to your site?

The very best of luck with this project.

PS - If technology is not your thing, you will probably need assistance. Perhaps you could partner up with a techie.

If you only have 30 products perhaps you could use Ebay to market your products and sell... just an idea :)

Another couple of good options to check out are http://www.shopify.com and http://www.1shoppingcart.com - they're hosted rather than self-hosted carts (i.e. you pay monthly and they take a cut off sales, but do the heavy lifting on the ecommerce side).

Can you tell us why, from a business perspective, you want to go online? Do you have an existing full-time or part-time business, or is this a hobby, etc? There's plenty of folks who'll give you great advice in here so tell us what's your motivation :)
