Garmin 500 - Up[loading Issues

Does anyone have issues with Garmin 500 uploading data to their PC. Have mine a week and it is very difficult to upload. When attached to PC via USB cable, it turns itself off and goes into rechanging mode, so that Garmin Connect cannot find the device.

Does this happen to anybody else?
    Suggestions?

These guys are the pits when it comes to technology.

Have you tried a different USB port or even a different machine?

    Yes to both.

Can you see it as an external device? I mean is it just a Garmin connect problem or is it not seeing it in Windows (or your OS of choice).

Check your firmware version on the device too.

OK, no idea what firmware is?
But to answer your question the computer knows that a device is plugged in via USB cable, as it asks me would I like to download pictures from Garmin 500 (WTF?).
However Garmin Connect cant see it.
I turn on the Garmin, plug it into the PC.
It then shuts off and goes into recharge mode.
Then Garmin Connect cant pick it up as it is not turned on.

Ok, you can still go into the device? If so, you just need to grab any files in the "activities" folder (.FIT files). You can then manually upload them to Garmin connect. It's not too much hassle, I'm running firefox in Ubuntu 9.04 and Garmin connect tells me it doesn't support my browser and to manually upload them.

Firmware = the software that makes the garmin work, might be worth seeing if you can find a newer version, it might fix the problem. You should be able to check what version you have by rooting around in the menus on the Garmin (they normally put these things in a "about my Garmin" or some similar menu entry).

    Hi Rok.
I don't turn it on the unit first. I just plug it in after I have opened the Garmin site and it connects fine for me and then starts device itself. I then select the Upload option and the then select device and bingo.

I do remember it being a bit fiddlely once on the upload side of things but a bit of reconnecting & re-opening site worked for me.
    Hope that helps.
Has anybody got any feedback on their Temperature readings or Calorie consumption figures. Both erratic?

Take calorie reading with a pinch of salt, temperature takes a while to settle, I think it's reasonably accurate once it has though.

Cheers -YEP was kinda hoping there was a magic solution for both although I do cover the unit on breaks so that the sun doesn't totally melt it. I have adjusted the criteria for the "intensity" setting, (and fiddled the weight of the rider:rolleyes:) but cals register about half of what they should be. Think I may have to live with it which is a bit disappointing considering the cost. Good otherwise though.

When you connnect your 500 ignore the automatic prompt that comes on when you connect a USB device. Close it off.
Ensure your 500 is off when you plug it into your PC.
    sign into Garmin connect.
If your firmware is up to date you will see an option for "upload" should be in the near top right screen. If you don't it is likely your firmware (software) is not up todate. Up date it using the garmin site.

when you are signed in to Garmin Connnect and you have a garmin device connected it will pick it up.
If this is not happening you have the option of rebooting the device record some data and then reconnect to garmin connect to upload and see if that resolves your issue

not that i'm an expert on this but i have a garmin 705 with a heart rate monitor. the unit gives me a calorie burn even when i don't wear the heart rate monitor, but i'm assuming it would be more accurate when wearing the HR monitor am i correct in thinking this?

Are you wearing your heart rate monitor if you have one?

Yep I use the HRM and think I have it set correctly. Good idea though,
I might take it off and see what the unit records as a test!

    Lads
Picked out this thread hoping you can help me, tried uploading Garmin from a spin yesterday in the rain, Lap Top giving message that it does not recognise USB device, it actually tries to turn itself on when you plug it into computer.
Not sure if this is siginificant, but whilst on spin yesterday, it seemed to go abit awry, a load of data came up on screen which I couldn't read as it was so small, I turend garmin on and off again and everything seemd to be fine, till I tried uploading this evening.
    Any ideas ???

Try powering off and on while connected to laptop? Sometimes my mac won't recognise it while plugged in. I'm not sure of the cause. At the worst you might need to restore the garmin firmware via the web updater software.

Worked this morning first thing, can't figure it out, maybe it was still suffering from the effects of the rain.
Although the automatic upload hasn't worked in a while, but can still do manually.
