RTE & Trevor Steven

While I am a big fan of RTE's soccer coverage...I had to switch off the USA v England match as the commentary by Steven being so biased towards his beloved England. As we are neither American nor British I feel the commentary must be unbiased. I was cheering on the States. Hearing him talk about what the English team must do every time he opened his gob I got annoyed at his one sided view.

I watched the match on ITV instead, as I at least expected them to be up for their own country.

Hoping RTE do a more unbiased view in future...

    Soccer section?
    TV section?

I know they used to exist sometime!

All world cup related threads should be shoved into its own section, otherwise AH is going to be filled up for the next weeks with this stuff consistently popping up.

I was lolling at the commentary last night. ITV were saying at points how good the English were, while Rooney was 'getting more and more into the game'.They also felt a draw wasn't a bad result.
Graham Sounnes and Eamonn Dunphy thought it was disasterous. am I theonly person that enjoys listening to Dunphy?

@Dibhal Beag; Bill O' Herlihy's reaction to that was priceless!

"I wish the other 48,000 fans were like him!"

Sounues is the only person who is worth listening to, the rest are people who can only imagine what it is like to be a top player

Yerra RTE is great for the banter between dunphy and 'Senior Analyst Giles'!

Disagree, I feel you have to have won the European Cup to be regarded as a top player

the irish panal says it as it is, they can almost say what they like about the none irish sides, beceause unless you your watching rte online or have an irish sky card, your not going to hear it, they have no backlash to fear

the english panal, now have splinters from sitting on the fence from the fear of saying something offencive or negative

    I've never said this before but....IBTL :D

Plus what a load of crap. Giles did play in a European Cup Final which Leeds very harshly lost. Plus a Cup Winners Cup final loss that is now regarded as being fixed by AC Milan. Maradona never won a European Cup. Crap wasn't he?

Anyway, Trevor Steven was not remotely biased. He regularly said how bad England were playing. Just because he has an English accent does not mean he was biased.

Keane did not play in the final, but he did get a medal. Shearer followed his heart Bless

I thought Maradona won a World Cup, that makes him THE top player

No his criticism of the surface and the grass that appeared suddenly in the second half were totally valid.

    No, really, they were.

You said winning a European Cup makes somebody a top player. You did not mention World Cups. I was throwing your poor logic back at you.

    No, really, they were.

He actually said that England should have had no problems playing on that surface. He specifically said the pitch was not a problem.

Well it does, they win their domestic League and then go on and beat the best of the European Leagues. In saying that the Champions League is not a pure competition as you no longer have to be a Champion to enter, as a result the winners are somewhat comprimised

So Djimi Traore > Maradona? And Dida > Buffon? Sorry but you are making an awful argument about deciding the merits of top players.

The modern format could be debated all day. The old format was harder to qualify for, but it could also lead to a far easier route to the final. In 77 Liverpool played Crusaders (from Northern Ireland), Trabzonspor of Turkey, Saint-Étienne (a decent team), FC Zürich in the semis and Borussia Mönchengladbach (another decent team) in the final. Not exactly a hard route to the final.

But they were all Champions were`nt they!

So playing Crusaders who were champions is harder than playing Real Madrid who might have finished second in La Liga? Honestly this is going nowhere so I give up.

So by that measure, Pelé is not a top player?

Trevor Steven is our main English pundit and a former England international, of course he's going to be biased towards England. I expect Hamann and Ardiles will be biased towards their respective countries too.

(Edit: wait... why is this in AH?)

Pelè never played for a European club did he?
