Search for all cars of a particular model sold in Ireland

    Hi

I did a quick search through the forum but could not find and answer to my question. Is it possible to search for all cars of a particular model still registered in Ireland.

Say for example I wanted to look for all Ford Escorts sold during 1980 to see how many were still registered is this possible?

I know there are many websites such as cartell, motorcheck, etc. but they do cost a lot of money.

If I was to walk into the VRO would they entertain my query?

    Regards

    David

I'd very much doubt it David. More like something ending with off. :p

Now, lets assume they were endlessly helpful.

The problem you have then is a flaky database.

    a) Not everything will be correctly registered under the correct make/model.
    b) They'll be vehicles registered that have dissolved into the earth or scrapped that haven't been notified.
    c) They'll be vehicles which have dubious IDs.
    d) They'll be vehicles not even on the database wearing non-state plates.
    e) Some vehicles will be put under a dump code, so sorting by statistical code would miss them.

and so on, and so forth.

So a central registration database is only as good as the information entered into it, which would be only as useful as a guestimate.

    What he said ^

It is possible to do this in england alright with the DVLA,i have the listings for last year for all the remaining Datsuns over there, both on the road and on SORN,this still doesnt account for the ones not SORN notified though..

But Ireland being Ireland, no one will want to tell you anything. Maybe you should write to them and see what they say anyways.

Well I am afraid this information will be hard and probably not accurate to get in Ireland.
I think VRO got fully equip (central database and so on) arround 1983, but I am not sure.

I don't think the will be able to tell you, but you can go and ask in the VRO.
Just tell them that you want to know you many are left in the country.

I would like to know for my car from 1977, but it will not really possible. I suppose if they look at it they should be able to tell me something like "will still have 100 of them registered" and that will be it.

Obviously any mistake done during data entering would not show up but it will be better than nothing :)

Yes I thought as much :-)

I was hoping to possibly shorten my search but I will have to keep trawling all the usual websites on a daily basis in hope that the classic I am looking for turns up, at the right price of course.

    Many thanks

    David

What particular year make and model are you looking for and I can trawl through the registrations I have recorded.

I know a Garda checked out how of my brothers cars that they had on the system for him when he brought his car into them to get forms signed. But the garda only did that for him because he was so intrested in it himself.

Incidently he told him there were 16 Xr2 registered and on the system, and 3 or 4 of his RS turbo fiestas in the country.

I supose if you knew a nice garda they might be able to help. But as the lads said its not very accurate information.

Is that all of the MK1,2 and 3 XR2s then, you cant be exactly sure. Still if thats the total for the three marks, its quite small!

    Hi Darren

I am not sure if you are into Land Rovers or not but I am actually looking for a Range Rover 2 door model which would have been sold between say 1970 and 1981 approx.

I was hoping to find out how many were first registered in Ireland during this period and also how many have survived and are still registered.

Feeling a little lost after selling my 1976 Land Rover 101 last year and need a replacement.

    Regards

    David

Some people might keep databases of those cars e.g. I'm currently building a database of Irish Mk1 & Mk2 Escorts and I know where thieres lists of Irish Corolla GT Coupes etc.

Im not sure id imagine its the MK2`s as thats what my brother has. but then would any garda data base make any distinction of mark of car.... IM not sure, Ill ask him next time I talk to him.

I know the NCT people told him a few years ago that there was only 4 RST fiestsa on the NCT system and now it seems the garda have 3, We only know of one other lad who has an RST firsta in the north west area so I wonder who has the other.

As in original reg'd cars or any irish registered escort in the country?

An original Irish reg list would be almost impossible as so many Escorts are wearing 'original/non original' numbers.

They're Irish numbers either way so it would still be a representation of numbers sold

200+ Mk2s on old Irish plates, so thats not including any UK reg or imports.

I doubt you'll get what you're looking for from the VRO - they'd have no incentive to give out that info, it would probably involve a lot of red tape, if you contact them you'll probably find it difficult getting to talk to the right person who even understands what you want etc.

You'd be more likely to get it from cartell or one of the other sites. who I believe can run custom queries on their database but obviously will charge for it. Why not contact them and see how much it is.

As already stated the database will have errors in it eg cars recorded as "other". But most entries should be correct. If you were to ask for a list of tax expiry dates for Ford Escorts from 1980 you'd get a good estimate of how many roadworthy or near roadworthy examples are left. Maybe you could exclude cars listed as imports if you want to focus on original Irish cars. You will find that only a tiny percentage of original Irish cars will have survived, the vast majority will have tax expired for 15 years at least.

I was thinking that maybe you could contact the Distributor of the cars as they would have records. Although in some cases, Distributors have come and gone and records probably lost, ie The Smith group or the company that imported FSO and other unknowns!. They may not have the registeration numbers of the cars but they may be able to tell you what specs and bodystyles were sold here (assuming they are still trading and if they want to show you confidential information!). I experienced receiving a lot of promotional material about a car that I had owned 20 years ago.....so they have ways and means of obtaining data on cars that exist and also scrapped!....:)
