Handlebar Width

Any advice on what optimal handlebar width for a road bike should be? Got a new bike and the handlebars look and feel really wide - they are almost three cm wider than my shoulder measurement. I feel a little unbalanced on it but perhaps thats because I'm not used to it yet but thinking of taking it back and asking shop to put narrower bars on.

yeah you want them about shoulder width, better to have them a *little* too wide, than too narrow though. If its obviously wider like you are suggesting Id say a little more narrow will be just right!

I agree with me@ucd. Although i changed from 42cm to 44 cm bars which are probably a bit to wide for me but it does help when climbing,as the chest is able to breathe easier
