Ring the prison and ask them.

I know they're in there , I'm just wondering what's the deal with addressing letters to them .

Not all prisoners are allowed letters at all times. It would be best to contact the prison to confirm what your acquaintance is entitled to.

There are rules about visits. You have to be on the list of people (typically 6 adults, any number of children) nominated by the prisoner and have an appointment.
