Want to be able to watch the world cup in HD on ITV HD

Have a full 1080p 42" going to waste with crappy SDTV

    have the HDMI cable

and a standard freeview box set up

so I need a HD free viewbox correct?

the stations that are HD do they broadcast in 1080p or 1080i or 720p or 720i

I see a lot of the HD freeview boxes saying in small print they upscale to 1080i

which is crappy unless there only broadcast in 720p?

anything you would recommend? don't want a recorder on it

can I use the same dish or is a new dish needed?

or ise it just the decoder that needs to be changed (the box) on to the same satellite connection attached to the roof

    thankssssssss

hd channels are broadcast on 1080i,

just get a hd freesat box, something like this

existing dish and cable will be fine.

looking @ something like this atm

can the cable coming in off the roof for the normal freeview box receive the stations, when connected to this new box?

Be warned that tonights England game was mostly upscaled and they missed Gerrards goal completely.

No . thats a freeview box....

you want a freeSAT box. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humax-HD-Freesat-Receiver-Installation/dp/B00264GX40/ref=pd_cp_ce_0

as i have said just plug in your existing feed from the Satellite dish.

No. You would need a HD combo box like this.

Play Tv is only for DVB-T (DTT) not DVB-S2 (HD SAT).

    No is the answer.

Yes, intense embarassment for ITV over this. Apologies all round I guess. Second time this has happened now with them. Goal also missed in that Liverpool v Everton FA Cup match a while back. Tons of upset posters over in Digital Spy. Complaints to OFCOM being recommended etc.

Also it seems the game wasn't in actual HD for the whole time, and dropped back to upscaled SD now and again according to DS posts. Was out last night so couldn't confirm. Anybody see this? Definitely a bad night for ITV!

Yep, just before Gerrard scored it went to an ad for Hyundai and then the ITVHD logo came up on full screen, about 10 or 15 seconds later the picture comes back with Gerrard running away celebrating! In the confusion I did'nt notice the picture quality deteriorating straight away, I was watching it on a HD projector, it was only when it went to a full shot of the pitch I noticed it was SD, luckily for me I have Sky Italia HD and I switched over to that, picture on that for me was even better than ITV when it was in HD. I flicked back a few times during the game after that and ITV were still showing it in SD.
BTW, I've watched the premiership and Champions League on Sky Italia HD for the last 6 months and I think the HD quality is even better than Sky UK.

I have to say I'm finding both itv and bbcs HD coverage mediocre at best.

It has the look of upscaled sd rather than true HD, which if true, is veery disappointing.

No. That would be twice resolution. I said twice bandwith. HD streams of the same reolution can vary widely in bandwith. Goes back a long way, Sony sold DVDs as superbits because they bumped up thebitrate

And to be fair it's not quite 2x but not far off

Thanks for the replies. I may get sky sports back in for the start of the season and the HD package. I'm only on a 37" plasma so obviously the step up in PQ won't be as obvious as the 110" monsters but I'm sure I'll see an improvement. :)

Why not ask them for an offer if you recently cancelled or downgraded. See this :)

got sky HD yesterday, the quality on ITV1 HD and BBC HD are good but the quality on Sky One and Eurosport HD are just so much higher, I dont have Sky Sports Hd to compare with yet.

Can I ask what size screen you are viewing on?

Gave them a call this evening and the best they could offer was 20% off my bill for 6 months if I upgraded to either or both of the preium packages.

Not enough of an incentive so I'll leave it for the time being.

    Got through to Cork btw.
