Internet without 3g coverage

Is it possible to use the internet on a 3gs when I just have regular coverage, but no 3g. On all phones I have had previously I could do this, but not with the iphone it seems or else I am missing something. If there is some sort of way around this, I would love to know, thanks! I have my phone jailbroken already fyi

have ya got sbsettings installed, if yes make sure ya dont have data turned off, if ur with o2 ya should be on edge when there is no 3g, edge is shown as an E and gprs is shown as a blue dot
