Applying for student jobs

I will be going back to college this september and will probably need a job sometime. Probably will end up applying to shops, restaurants, bars and the like. Moving to a big city so i am sure to get something.

Anyway is it worth making out a cover letter? Probably will be going down and viewing accommodation sometime in august and bring my cv also and get in there early. What do i include on the cover letter? Do i let them know im fairly flexible. Do i let them know the type of hours im willing to work? Like weekends and probably 2 evenings during the week. Not to fussy what days i do but i would probably want 3 evenings off anyway to study and get projects done.

What do i include to make myself look good? Thanks

Hi, have you worked anywhere before?

    I would have something like,

    I am a student at X college
I am available on day x, y, z, x amount of hours per week (also say if you are flexible- supermarkets for example love people who can come in at an hour's notice- for example when someone calls in sick at 9 and the shift starts at 10!).
I have experience in the (retail, restaurant etc) industry
    I have x, y, z skills
I can be contacted at 08x xxx xxxx

Thanks for that. Just checking really to see if it will look ok mentioning the hours/days i can work on the letter. Have worked in factories before. Did a bit of hotel work a few years back also. I should definately include the transferable skills anyway.

Yes, definitely mention your past experience and how many days you can do. Say that you are flexible too (for example one week they might want you to do Sat/Sun, another it could be Fri/Sun, etc).
Being a team player is definitely a relevant transferable skill, you will also be experienced in following procedure, also mention if you are punctual and work hard.
