Just wanted to get a few drummers opinions on Piccolo snare drums. A lot of drummers seem to use them as a side snare, what are your opinions?

It completely depends on the style of music or in many cases, the mood of the song you are playing!
I have a 14x3 pearl free floating piccolo, it's awesome for funky stuff - hasn't got the phat or weight for hard rock though - but sometimes that's why it works - if you play something a little funky in a hard rock song - think Limp Bizkit, that dude uses a piccolo and it works for him.
I prefer to use a 14x5.5 maple shell snare drum - lots of depth and warmth - a great general purpose snare drum.
I'd use a pearl firecracker (popcorn) snare drum for the side - sounds awesome!
