You'll probably need to give more details- what do you do, how much do you earn, how many hours do you get and what kind of abuse is going on?

And what age you are? And if over 18, how many years employment since turning 18?

    ub-minimum rates from 1 July 2007

The National Minimum Wage Act provides the following sub-minimum rates:

An employee who is under 18 is entitled to €6.06 per hour (this is 70% of the minimum wage)
An employee who is in the first year of employment since the age of 18 is entitled to €6.92 per hour (80% of minimum wage)
An employee who is in the second year of employment since the date of first employment over the age of 18 is entitled to €7.79 per hour (90% of the minimum wage)
This phasing in of the National Minimum Wage also applies to employees who are over 18 and enter employment for the first time.

Looks like your employer is taking the minimum wage act very literally, do you get and tips?

Most supermarkets start at about €9.00 for all over 18s.

I think supermarkets have to pay more by law, no idea where I read that though so I could be way off!

that looks right, but dont have time to check it. Some jobs like retail, have higher rates, but unsure at the moment if you have one. Will check into it and let you know

Wow, I was under the impression (aswel as all other young people) that the minimum wage is 8.65

How do I get a job in a supermarket

The previous info MAY be correct.

I have looked this up but there are so many different ifs and buts, then it can be hard to fathom.

Some trades have different minimum wages rates. Retail has one, catering another etc etc.

I have looked it up and there is a mention of catering - which seems to include waitering BUT there is a difference depending on your area.

Attached is a link which takes you to the area concerning it, but you will have to naviagate to the area appropriate for you.

    http://www.employmentrights.ie/en/informationforemployees/industryspecificinformation/catering/

This may be relevant to you, it depends where you are employed.

All this legislation is a joke, its such a maze, it can be impossible to find out for certain if its relevant to you. I got caught out by this a couple of years ago, but the inspector said it was minor and common, so no problems.

The example above mentions Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, but just across the border in Naas, or Bray, entitlements are different.

Not a lot of people know this, there is a lot of ifs and buts involved.

Have a read. If you do ring employment rights and ask them, expect a delay. I believe they are up to their proverbials.
