Hey folks. My sister is moving up to a newer car and we are debating if it is better to sell privately or just trade the old car in. The car is a 2000 VW Lupo 1.0 litre Comfortline and has just over 100k miles on it. The bodywork is a little untidy for it's age (lots of scratches and a small crack in the rear bumper), interior is grand but needs a good cleaning, it also has an electric sunroof but occasionally it gets stuck. (VW electrics). On the plus side the car has a fresh NCT, serviced and 4 new tyres back in February, is driving fine and has a few months worth of motor tax left on it.

Anyone hazard a guess to how much it would be worth asking for if selling privately? I'm thinking given the above NCT, 4 pretty new tyres and a few months road on it I'd stick it up at around €900 and work from there.

Now selling privately obviously makes more financial sense as I cannot see it being worth much to a garage if traded in against a €4500/5000 newer car. Plus other draw backs are that she has already spotted a new car so there is no room to potentially have 2 cars parked at her home. I do have plenty of room at my place but I live about 15 miles from the city where she lives which makes it very awkward if potenial buyers come to view the car.

Seems to be shortage of such cars at the moment, mostly due to the scrapage scheme. It should shift pretty quick in a private sale as a result. Perhaps stick it up on adverts.ie. Not knowing enough about it is a bit difficult, but perhaps start at €1,500 (at best) and work back.
