Im amazed with all the sporting content shown on rte that they dont even have a part time hd channel, Is there any news of rte adding a hd channel in the future.

O'Herlihy and Dunphy in glorious HD? Mind-boggling!!! Seriously though, it probably won't be happening for a good while yet.

Would say as well with all this world cup in FTA HD, RTE must be suffering viewing figures. I know all my mates are watching the World cup either on ITV or BBC HD this year!

I am watching RTÉ for the punditry and BBC/ITV for the actual games, so I do see RTÉ's adverts which is probably all they care about.

I'd say RTE will go HD when everyone else is gone 3D.;-)

I've yet to see our TV Licence fees to be put to good use. I wouldn't mind paying the fee if could see some improvements and some additional services. The RTE Player is great, but it needs to be improved so much like by allowing access from different devices (iPhone, etc.), and I know see BBC have movies on their iPlayer. I wouldn't mind seeing the Mid Week Movie on the player even if they are somewhat old most weeks.

I'd love to see a HD channel too but the only way for it to happen is if it is put on a Subscription service such as Sky or UPC, until our Digital Terrestrial service is officially launched.

So the entire World Cup combined with all of the GAA matches on offer isn't "good use", then ?

I believe RTE had the rights to the World Cup and the GAA matches before the TV Licence fee came in, and even if they didn't advertisement fees would be able to fund the rights for these events.

RTE will never be HD I reckon cos they don't have the money to spare and Irish DTT is basicly awaiting an official burial. As people realise that HD is on FTA and as more FTA channels become availible (be it FTA or Sky) the younger viewers esp will move away from RTE and they will be left with Grannies and the farmers sat in front of the Late Late and Fair City.

Only more so! As mentioned above sporting and other live events will see a leakage away from RTE. 3D will be the norm before RTE get HD on DTT.

HD isn't even the norm and 3D will never catch on for normal viewing due to having to wear those stupid glasses, it will be more a quirky feature for watching movies in.

I was exaggerating to make a point.

I agree there will always be a mix of 3D/2D content, but 3D in the home is being pushed more for sport than movies.

3D TV is a gimmick and will never be mass market no matter how many TVs are capable of receiving it. TV manufacturers need an evolution from HD and they see 3D as they way forward but its not going to happen.

Its very like when mobile operators saw MMS as the natural evolution of SMS. It never happened and it never will because picture messaging will always be gimmicky and niche.
