Out of Warranty Sky+ & Service Call

    Hi folks

I've had some misfortune with a "power surge!?" that knocked out my 42" plasma PSU and seemed to impact the Sky+ box too, noisier than normal, anyway it gave up the ghost on Wednesday so I rang Sky to cancel my sub, got thru to Cork CS and was talked into a free service call for last night "you might even get a new HD box", jeez they're quick these day, anyway I specifically checked whether the service would involve removing the dead Sky+ box and was told "No, its out of warranty and anyway its yours", .... planned to use Copy+ to get recordings off old drive.

So, service guys called, fitted refurb Amstrad PVR3 and boxed up my old stb, "Hey, wait a mo guys", long discussion, call to Sierra managment, wanted old box so I refused, they took out the "new" Sky+ and left.

A call to Sky CS this morning seems to confirm this was correct after a check with a "manager".

I'm about to ring cancellations and get rid of the whole package (Sky+ x2 multiroom) but just wanted to check with everyone if they've had to similar problem, did Sky offer any solution etc.

Still bloody annoyed, took a half day to meet crew too

    thanks, rant over ;)

(apologies, originally posted to OT thread in error)

Let me get this straight, you got a free service call, and a replacement box,and they wanted to take your old box and you refused to let them...?

Firstly Im amazed they gave you a free service call they usually charge €100 just for the call out...and secondly Im even more amazed you refused to give them your old box....seems a good deal to me...a free service call and a second hand box for a box that is damaged...Im sure that box would have been repaired and probably offered to some1 else as part of a free service call...

    Steveon hi

thanks for the reply, I think you missed the point, the free service was a sweetener to prevent me cancelling, it seems to be the norm these days, I have many hours of unwatched recorded material on my old drive which is easily recoverable, I was enquiring about the ownership of out of warranty boxes,I want to keep this material that I've spent considerable time accumulating, if I wanted a new box I could simply cancel and apply under the others halves name.

I Havent missed the point at all, signing up undering the wifes name is actually committing fraud under skys terms and conditions, companies do this to simply make money and is a scam that is being investigated constantly by sky, I know countless people whom got caught out by this.

I dont see why sky should have to fix your sky box for free, your tv company doesnt fix your tv when its breaks down after its warranty nor would you expect them to...you got a free service and should have been grateful, there are countless others that would have been delighted to have gotten that far.. if you wanted your recordings you could have simply removed your hard-drive and swapped it into the new machine, would have taken approx 10 mins with the rite tools.....and gave the old box for recycling...

And secondly how do you even know it isnt your hard-drive that isnt corrupted in the first place...when a Sky box doesnt detect the Hard-drive within the first 5 seconds it will not switch on..

    Steveon hi

just a quick and final post, I didn't ask Sky to fix my Sky+ for free nor was I expecting them to!, they offered a free service call to prevent a genuine cancellation, their CS told me the out of warranty box was mine as I'd explained to them I wanted to keep my recordings if a refurb box was to be supplied, I was upfront with them at all times, what p1$$ed me off was the change on service call, I would have swapped the HDD but there was no need to according to CS and I had no opportunity to once the service guys called.

I'm back to my original plan of BUYING a box on ebay whilst cancelling Sky til everything is up and running properly, TV included!

Regardless of whether I should be thankful to Sky for giving me a refurbished box, I just wanted to know if they/ Sierra were in their rights to try and take my old one!? especially since no attempt was made to make any repairs
