I'm after applying for a number of jobs in the UK recently and i've been told i must have a UK National insurance number to start work over there if i'm offered a job over there. Would anyone on here be able to tell me if i can apply for this insurance number now even though i'm currently still living here in Ireland?

Thanks very much for the information Victor. It seems straightforward enough and it's no harm to have 1 in case i do get an offer in the UK. Thanks again.

I have worked in the UK, and when I started working I applied for an NI number. You just get called to a very brief interview, it is really nothing major, just to verify that you are who you say you are really, and they issued the number very soon afterward. As soon as you get over apply for the number and it took a couple of weeks to get the interview and you want to get your tax etc sorted out. You need proof of address from what I remember, a letter from your place of work and photo ID.

I wonder could you do it up the North, since it's in the UK? Would be the easiest option I'd say.

They can also give you a temporary one if needs be - they had to do that for me when I moved over.
It can take a few weeks for the proper number to come through, so I'd say it's worth asking for a temporary one as well in your case.

I think it took me about 6 weeks to get one when I moved over here. It is a few years ago so I can't really remember the interview, but I think it was more like a quick chat and show some ID to prove who you are. Something like 15 mins in total.

You are given a temp number when you start until the real one comes through. There is no real need to worry about it until you start work.
