Im currently on the look out for a new car and have come across a couple of golfs which have taken my fancy. Id be looking for a diesel from 04 onwards preferably 3door and my budget would be somewhere around approx 10k. Im just wondering if anyone has any experiences, or comments about them in general anything I should look out for with them etc.

It'll more than likely be a UK import if you're buying one with any bit of spec. With that in mind make sure to do all the usual checks, and if one is low mileage make sure it is low mileage. If it's high mileage get one with a Full service history, there are plenty of them out there so finding a good one shouldn't be hard, but it will be worth the effort.

Apparently fly wheels give trouble in the 1.9's so make sure it was replaced and if it wasn't budget for it.

Try get a 2.0 tdi over the 1.9, they're 35bhp more (140 compared to 105) and leagues ahead as far as a diesel can go over another.

As far as a Golf goes after then, they're horrible when basic but anything Comfortline (second spec) and above, they're a fairly nice place to be.

Also note that they're fairly popular in diesel, so I'd price Passats as well as you may get more bang for your buck if you're ok with driving a saloon.

    Cheers Limerick Man,

What kind of milage would be resonable for a 04? Would these cars be capable of high milage?? I saw one online which fits the bill pretty well but it has 130k miles is this a bit high?

Thats high for an 04. My 01 has 88K miles.

On average you should be looking at between 10k - 12k miles per year. An 04 should have around 65k - 75k.

10k to 12k is average for a petrol car, not a diesel car. The average for a diesel car is around 18k to 20k miles per year. 130k is just over 20k miles per year on a 6 year old car which is by no means unusual.

Anyway the important thing is how and where the car was driven, 130k miles driven up and down UK motorways is alot less wearing to a car than 65k miles on Irish bog roads with nothing but potholes. I've said this before but a car's odometer reading is not an accurate indication of use or wear.
