Can anyone help with the procedure used to remove the steering wheel on a 2000 polo. I have read that if it is not removed correctly the air bag can deploy, also do you have to remove battery connection. Is there a special tool required to pop the air bag from the entry holes at the rear of the steering wheel or can a small flat screwdriver be used.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes always disconnect the battery before disconnecting airbags, otherwise it will throw a light/code that will need to be reset with a special tool.
Plus obviously it is less dangerous.

Look at this DIY for the procedure

First, disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.

Then, using a screwdriver, release the airbag clips by moving them to one side while gently pulling the airbag forward. There is a special tool but it can be done with a flathead screwdriver.

Once the airbag is removed, release the large centre nut that holds the steering wheel to the shaft but be sure to mark the position of the wheel so that it is put back in the same position.

Be careful not to disturb/remove the contact slip ring.

Why do you need to remove the steering wheel?

I need to change the indicator switch. Is the blade of the screwdriver inserted vertically or horizentally to engage the clip.
    Thanks in advance

Just when you're pulling the steering wheel off, leave the boss nut on a few turns, this will eliminate the risk of snotting yourself when the wheel flys back at your face.
