Social anxiety, looking for good hypnotherapist

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to this so hope you can help me out.
I'm a 40 year old mother of two and suffer from social anxiety and panic attacks (it's not all the time just on and off and depends on the situation).
I am looking for a recommendation for a good hypnotherapist, preferably an analyitical hypnotherapist.
Please note I'm only interested in finding a hypnotherapist, I'm not really interest in any other forms of therapy.
I would love to hear other peoples hypnosis success stories please. I seen a couple of posts where people don't seem to think very highly of hypnotherapists.. I respect that as perhaps they had bad experiences etc. But I'm only looking for the good stories please, as this is the route I wish to go down.
I'd appreciate very much any names and numbers or any pm s regarding hypotherapists.
I live on the east coast so I'll travel anywhere between Dublin and Newry.

Thank you so much for reading this and for any recommendations you can give me.

    eve38

I'd suggest that perhaps your GP could provide a recommendation.

Also having suffered with very similar problems myself, I would advice you don't reject any type of therapy before you try it with a therapist you trust.

I have tried 2 types of therapies, both of which I was very sceptical before trying, hell I was down right dismissive, however, to get better I had to respect that I was not an expert in psychotherapy and I had to trust the professionals.

I hope you find help, best of luck!

    Hi Eve38,

i am in a simulair situation as yourself.

I suffer from social anxiety and feel that hypnotherapy is the only way to go.

I tried cognitive therapy a few years ago that teaches you about your fears etc and forces you to get into situations that are scary.

No luck there as these therapies don't change your sub conscious thinking at all, i know that the fears i have are irrational but can't seem to shake them.

I have read alot about hypnotherapy (reframing, NLP etc) and will be contacting the Bwell clinic in Malahide (www.bwell.ie) in the near future.

I found it on the web and it seems a legitimate clinic.

Hope this helps and good luck.

    Rgds,

    Maxim

Hi-Just wondering if you ever tried hypnotherapy at the bwell clinic in Malahide? My boyfriend is really struggling with social anxiety and we are desperate to try something that will work. He doesn't think he wants to try CBT but he would be willing to try hypnotherapy. Any advice?

I hope you have conquered your phobias.

you can do CBT on a one to one, as i said it really helped me and theres no medication. also its at your own pace so your boyfriend wont be made do anything he doesnt want to do, its all up to him. i didnt want to do it either but i figured there was no harm in trying because i coould stop whenever i wanted if it wasnt working

Hi Penguin xd, thanks so much for your comments. We are looking into all options at the minute and cognitive behavioural therapy keeps coming up. Do you mind me asking what exactly is involved in this? He is not very keen on talking to a stranger about every childhood detail as he puts it but I am trying to convince him that this isn't necessarily what's involved.

Good to hear you got help that made a positive difference.

i wasnt keen on talking to a stranger either but after a few sessions i was more comfortable to talk to him, his name was paddy. Like I said, he doesnt have to talk about that if he doesnt want to. Its all at his pace and when suits him. He gave me a book specifically for the cbt.

I think the first section would be to choose a situation where the anxiety kicked in, what you did, how you felt about what you did. the next part was the same situation but its what you would like to have done and how you would have felt about it. Its not just all talking about your feelings and childhood stuff. Its more about your way of thinking and trying to change it.

For example: I used to stay at home most of the time sitting around in my pyjamas and drink quite a bit. Paddy asked me to look at why i was doing it, what i wanted to change, and how i was going to do it. 5 months later I have my drinking well under control, im very happy and moving out of my dads home next week. I wouldnt have been able to do all this without the CBT

CBT is based on the idea that feelings and behaviors are caused by a person's thoughts not the environment around them which i leared is very true. I liked it because it was to suit me and i was in control

word to the wise, the current most effective treatment for Social Anxiety is CBT. It's what all the top psychologists and hospitals use to treat people with Social Anxiety. It's not a magic bullet, it takes time and effort BUT is has been scientifically proven to help people reduce their anxiety.

As someone who suffers from SA, i naively went down the hypnotherapy route looking for the quick fix. i searched the internet for a good hypnotherapist....they promised the earth....easy, quick, treatment to rid you of SA....blah, blah, blah. i went to the most professional therapist i could find and after spending a grand on treatment, i realised that i was completely wasting my time.

unfortunately the net is full of con artists promising you they can treat SA and a host of other issues through their therapy....and there is absolutely no regulation of them at this time so be very weary. stick to scientific methods.

i know your boyfriend isn't keen on doing CBT but realisitcally, it's the BEST treatment out their. he's got a number of options regarding which cbt he does. personally, i found the 'dr richards audio series' the best. you can download this series if you're computer savy.

he should also sign up to join the mater hospital cbt group. there's currently about a waiting list of about a year. however, he can work on the dr richards tapes in the meantime which will put in good shape to join the cbt group when it comes round.

a lot of therapists recommend that patients take medication whilst they do their cbt. this will get their anxiety under control. it really depends on the patient, how bad their anxiety, etc. they certainly don't have to take medication if they don't want to.

oh yeah, in case you're wondering.....my sa is way better than it was before...i still have it in certain situations which i need to work on but i've no doubt it will continue to improve as long as i keep up with the cbt.
