    new one on me
    http://livereport.pgatour.com/2010/06/11/dalys-dubious-day/

so the rule is now to mark the ball, identify and replace is there a prospect of gaining an advantage through cleaning the ball to establish the markings?
12-2 says yes. Not to be cleaned more than necessary - but what does that mean? Daly thought it was his ball based on the marking he could see, this would suggest a complete clean is the only sure way of identifying given the alternative is a penalty

under 12-1, you can clear impediments to find a ball, and then replace the impediments (all within a hazard)

I was labouring (as was Daly) under the old rule of hit then identify if you're confident it's not another ball in play from a playing partner / neighbouring fairway.
