ok, so this may brush on piracy a little but its not the case i can assure you.
got a new pc for christmas with a win7 home prem preinstalled but i formatted the hard drive(and recovery partition, woops) Can I simply install using any oem windows 7 disk like i could with xp and enter my own COA and get it activated properly?

    thanks

Alot of the Manufacturer OEM disks will check the hardware type to make sure it is from that manufacturer; Id personally take the hit, ring the manufacturer and get a disk re-issued. (normally between €15-25). You potentially may be able to install using some OEM media and use the product key off your COA sticker.
