    As per ShriekingSheet
It's matchplay against par - hence the name. It's the third choice of singles competition after s'ford and strokes.

Where you have a shot on a hole (index 1-5 for a 5 handicap and so on) the course "makes a bogey" so if you make a par you win the hole and go 1 up. It's pretty much the same as making a 3 pointer in s'ford but you can't get the equivilant of a 4 pointer as the best you can do is win a hole.

A par on a hole where you have no shot is a half, and obviously anything lilke a bogey where you've no shot or a d.bogey or worse where you have a shot is a loss of hole.

    thanks a lot.
Just wanted to check if it was a format where you could pick up the ball if things were going bad
Too inconsistent yet to have to play out every hole :o

I don't like the game personally Alx. Its basically as above against the par of the hole and you can pick up your ball if your score is not better than the par of the hole plus your handicap. However any day you can play competitive golf is good and with the weather this weekend you'll enjoy being out there for a few hours. Good luck and enjoy your round.

thanks - its actually next weekend so fingers crossed the weather is as good
I have avoided stroke play so far as still very much a beginner and am paranoid about slowing people up too much.
I'm happy enough with stableford as I know no matter how bad it gets I won't slow people up too much as I either pick the ball up or even worse - don't bother looking for it in my all too frequent forays into the rough/trees/gods know where :D
