BIKE-TO-WORK DAY CYCLE ‘JAM’ AT GRAND CANAL SQUARE

The Bike-to-Work Day takes place on FRI 18 June and in the early evening there is an ex-office ride out to Grand Canal Square (Dublin 4) from 17:30 h onwards.

We are calling it The Grand Canal Square Cycle ‘Jam’! Dublin cyclists will converge after work to demonstrate that cycling is the way to get around town – Ely Wine Bar is doing a BBQ and Erdinger is running an alcohol-free beer promotion in association with Ely. There will be bike stands for securing your bike. Music provided.

Bikes4Work.ie will announce the overall winner of their week-long competition which will invite cyclists to upload innovative and quirky photos of themselves and their bikes (full details at www.bikes4work.ie).

The Dublin Cycling Campaign will announce the winner of their Golden Pedal Award for the organisation in the Greater Dublin Area that has done most for cycling in the past year (see details and entry form at www.dublincycling.ie/goldenpedal).

    NUMBER PLATES A SAFETY MOVE

BICYCLES WILL be fitted with number plates in a novel programme aimed at raising awareness of cycle safety.

The scheme will be launched today in Co Mayo where over 1,000 schoolchildren will be issued with number plates for their bikes.

Irish law only requires vehicles powered by combustion engines to carry number plates.

Noel Gibbons, road safety officer with Mayo County Council, says the number plates scheme will help raise awareness of cycle safety.

“The purpose of the number plates is to raise awareness around cycle safety and encourage more people to take to the two-wheel mode of transport rather than the four wheels.

“We also want to get the young cyclist to remember that they have a responsibility for their own safety when using a bicycle.

“The plates can be personalised to show the name of the cyclist making them a great novelty gift for every child,” said Mr Gibbons.

Thin end of the wedge? Hardly the kind of message Bike Week should be pushing. :(

EDIT: I see there's a thread on this already. Oops.

From my time in Galway, IIRC that road is usually stuffed with parked cars. Hopefully this will change that.

Any news on the 3 intrepit cyclists that set off yesterday morning from the GPO with ambitions of cycling through all 32 counties this week?
