    Hi,

I would really appreciate it if anyone could provide some advice on the following please:
    • how to become a substitute teacher please.
    • applying for secondary school teaching for business
    • if there is currently a demand for Business teachers
I have an Honours Business Studies degree and I'm considering becoming a Business/Accounting Secondary school teacher. However, I would like to gain some experience subbing before I apply for the course so that I am more certain that this is what I'd like to do.

I am also very interested in sport and have participated on teams for many years so I would be very interested in getting involved in extra curricular activities within a school. Would this be of benefit in finding substitution work?

Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated,
    Thanks

    Hi,

I would really appreciate it if anyone could provide some advice on the following please:

Most substitute teachers are qualified teachers, who hold the Post Graduate Diploma in Education, who have been unable to secure year long contracts for an academic year. So instead of working in one school for the year they accumulate experience working substitution.

That said you do not neccesarily have to be a qualified teacher to be a substitute teacher. It is all about who you know. Previous to my Dip year I worked as a sub for five months through a combination of connections and convenience, they needed someone for my subjects asap and I was known to them.
    • applying for secondary school teaching for business
Well you can throw your CV in with a cover letter stipulating that you are interested in substitution to the schools in the locality stating your avalability. Alternatively keep an eye on the Independent.
    • if there is currently a demand for Business teachers
No. Im sorry to say there is no particular demand for ANY subjects and competition is stiff, even for people who are fully qualified. Business is a fairly common/popular degree also, so much so that there is a seperate entry onto the PGDE for business graduates in the NUI's.

That said if you personally dropped your CV into a principal, especially one you might know, and made a good impression this may stand more in your favour than the pile of faceless CV's in front of them.

I am also very interested in sport and have participated on teams for many years so I would be very interested in getting involved in extra curricular activities within a school. Would this be of benefit in finding substitution work?

It wouldnt hurt. If you were to go into teaching and were applying for jobs it is certainly something that would stand to you.

Also, are you male or female? And how old are you?
If you dont mind me asking?
