Help a complete novice

    Hi there,
I've gotten myself in a sticky situation with my phone and internet. I'm a complete and utter novice when it comes to this stuff so while I've tried googling and whatnot I'm getting even more confused and tech support on either end have been no help.

Bascially we had phone and broadband through Irish Broadband. This was the Breeze antenna on roof setup. Unfortunately I decided I wanted faster speed so called up IBB, was told it was fine to cancel internet and keep the phone. So I switched my broadband to UPC and after a weeks overlap IBB came and dismantled the antenna and took it away. At which point our phone stopped working. After ages on the phone to IBB they told me that our phone was a VoIP and I needed to connect it to the Cisco router supplied by UPC. Following his intructions I hooked the netgear to the Cisco and dialed into the router and made some changes. Still no phone. IBB informed me that I would need to contact UPC to get a password. After a week waiting for them to get back to me, they have now informed me they can't help me as I am not using their phone service.

So basically I've fecked up our house phone and have no idea what to do about it. No one mentioned anything to me when I cancelled IBB and switched to UPC but I informed both sides that I was cancelling breeze and switching to UPC but keeping the phone.

I can't switch phones because they won't let me keep the number and my mother is in the process of setting up a business and our house number is on all the leaflet/websites etc.

Can anyone help out an idiot? I had no idea what I was getting into.

Can you ask IBB if it at all possible to port your number over to UPC? Or even for them to redirect it to a new assigned by UPC?

It may now not be possible as IBB have cancelled your complete service. I would never have thought that it would have been possible to keep the voice serivce from IB without the broadband as it relies on the broadband since its VoIP.

Another suggestion would be to set up an account with Blueface (www.blueface.ie) - it won't matter which broadband service you use with them - DSL, Cable or Fixed Wireless.

I've sent an email off to IBB, according to UPC the number can be ported but I'm waiting on an email back from IBB.

I had no idea that the phone was VoIP until a week ago, I'm completely un-knowledgable in this area.

See I'd love to just switch to someone else, we initially tried to upgrade our IBB to their DSL service but were told the number couldn't be kep. So I really don't know what to do.

I also would advise that you use someone other than your broadband supplier for your phone service, and Blueface is one of the better options.
That would mean no more porting of numbers if you need to change broadband supplier in the future.

Maybe you should consider porting the number to Blueface or other independent VOIP supplier.
