Using sandpit to grow vegies

Hi all! We moved into our first house with a garden a few weeks ago and have already got some tomato, cucumber, courgette and salad leaves in growbags. There is a wooden sandpit (110x115x22 cm) which I thought I could use to grow something. The walls are about an inch thick and seem sturdy enough (they have some reinforcements). It has old sand in it and has not been covered. Still the wood looks fine. Can the sandpit be used to grow vegetables? What would you suggest I put in it? Will it be deep enough for onions and carrots?
