And it's very difficult to stick to particularly driving from Kells to Navan.

Well it will force people to use the motorway. They're putting a weight restriction in Kells as well so trucks will be forced on to the motorway either way. Whats the bets we'll be seeing lots of those new speed vans on the N3 when ever they are signed off.

Which of course is nothing to do with revenue generation and completely geared towards road safety.

    Of topic question..

Is there any route planners out there which include the M3. It's not on any of the maps yet. Need to travel to Donegal from Wicklow this weekend and i'm wondering would it be quicker taking the m3..

Tolls will be a pain though.

    .

Yep , the M3 is your man. M50 to the Blanchardstown exit and follow the signs for Navan and Cavan.

as far as I'm aware they cannot do this as there has to an alternative route for all vehicle's??

Also I'd say that the N3 will be downgraded to a regional route in the same way as the old N1 is now the R132 and this has an 80km/h speed limit also.

What I don't understand is how these route were safe to travel at 100km/h before the motorways when they were much more heavily used??

Many of them should never have been 100 km/h imo.

The N3 is now the R147 as of the middle of the night Thursday June 3rd- all signs were changed on the route (well from Dunshuaghlin to Clonee anyway)- so you are right about the speed limit due to this change.

Also I've seen the guards on the route (R147) already with the speed gun, and also just after Clonee when the M3 drops back to 100km and is the N3 again so I'd say it will def become a great little spped trap.

And don't forget to put the man with the red flag walking in front of the cars to warn all others of the dangers that follow!!

    Get a grip!!!!

Its perfectly sensetastic if you are a money maker and want more peeps in the toll.

It happened to the N4 but I and everyone I know still barrel down that at 100kph and no one has given out in the last few years. Even the Bus Eireann coaches go 100 down it. Cant remember what some of those are limited to though.

    yawn

Many national routes were literally lethal to do 100 km/h at. I'm sure you're the best driver in the world though so you didn't have to worry about that.

Yeah I'm sure everyone involved in those accidents were sticking to 100km/hr and keeping to their own side of the road...

100km/hr is perfectly safe when you don't drive like an idiot.

There are stretches on the N72 where it's perfectly fine to do 100. The signs aren't forcing you to drive 100 on the bad sections.

Most of the redesignated primary route sections were perfectly safe for 100km/hr throughout most of their length. Are you saying it wasn't possible to do 100km/hr on the N8 before it was downgraded?

Is this a PPP? I think the government won't get money from this anyway no?

To those saying the N3 isn't suitable for 100 km/h you are wrong. It's a great road for the majority of it.
Parts are suitable for 180 km/h, lovely smooth tarmac and only a slight bend. Can't get better than that!

Depends on the contract, but for most contracts, a certain amount of the income from tolls goes towards the government. In the case of the M3 contract though, the government actually stands to lose money if people don't use the road as there's a traffic guarantee clause in the contract. If enough people don't use the motorway, then the government will have to subsidize the toll operators.

let's not forget the VAT the government will get from the toll.

There's a few threads on this in the Commuting/Transport, Infrastructure, Meath and Cavan forums but seeing as it's here too... :)

    - There's no time-saving to be made from the Virginia side to Navan.
It takes as long (around the 30-35 minute mark) as it did before the motorway opened, and now you have to pay €1.30 for the privilege.

On the plus side, the "old" N3 is significantly quieter so - even at 80 km/h on the relevant sections - if you do that run right, it's possible to do Virginia to Navan in 25 minutes and save the toll.

    - Now that the "old" N3 is now the R147 (with Regional status), it'll probably fall into disrepair fairly rapidly given that Meath Co Co are terrible at road maintenance generally (look at Kells and even Navan outside their own offices and up into the town past the bus stop, until they resurfaced it - FINALLY - a year or so ago). Plus there's no money anyway.

    - All this traffic dumped into Virginia (whereas it was previously staggered by lights in Dunshaughlin, Kells and Navan) has already had a negative effect on flow through the town.

    - Two tolls on this road (and then a guarantee of compensation from the general tax payer if the volumes aren't sufficent) is ridiculous! It gets even worse if you have to cross the M50 too (best part of a tenner per day!).

My personal opinion is that once the toll tag bills start arriving in a few weeks, people will start avoiding the M3 altogether (or bypassing the toll plazas) and the R147 will become as bad as ever... except that (as above) EVERYONE will be paying to make up the difference. :(
