Dead VAIO

My VGN-FS315B laptop (bought new early 2006) was working fine until today. It suddenly shut off, like a desktop PC taken off the mains. Couldn't be turned back on, even after following Sony's recommended support procedure which included removing the battery and powering via its adapter only.

I suspect the board or the CPU has simply reached the end of its life - just 4 years though? The fan had not been heard for months now, although no serious overheating was experienced and no freeze-ups usually associated with overheated components were encountered.

Is there any repair place that offers free diagnoses for such cases?

Is there any response at all?

If not I'd be looking at the power supply, any other problem in most cases will give you the dreaded beeps.

    Totally dead.

I had a Vaio die in 2006, because the projector it was working with was pumping hot air straight into it, and it melted the hard drive. When it cooled down, I was able to re-boot and recover some of my data, but basically the HD had to be replaced.
At an earlier stage, I thought I had a dead laptop (other manufacturer) and when I brought it in for repair, the main processor was missing! Did you by any chance leave it unattended, and is there any indication that it has been interfered with?
Vaios have had a problem with the hibernation option in the past. If you can start it in safe mode (though it doesn't sound as if you can) you might try switching off the hibernation option.
I love my new VPCS11V9E with backlit keyboard when it gets dark, and its lightweight too, but a bit pricey.(if you need to change).
