Studying law is something I always wanted to do but something I always shyed away from. . . .

I didn't have a great leaving cert (5 or 6 years ago), however I do have an honours degree 2.1

What avenues are available for me to attempt to gain access to a college or uni to study?

There are a number of graduate entry Law courses - I believe UL do one over two years, UCD do a two year MA in Law for non law grads I think (might be wrong on that).

With a 2.1 you'll get into either of these no problem.

It depends what you want to achieve in the end, and which avenue you would be most comfortable taking. You could start from scratch and get a law degree, but that's a long route to practice, three or four years in a degree programme, then a further two or three specialising, whichever route you decide. If you are academically confident, you could do an intensive course and go straight for the FE1s (to go to Blackhall to qualify as a solicitor), or for the King's Inns pre-BL course, for non-law degree graduates (barrister route). Some feel you should have the law degree behind you, but if your own degree is in some way related or complimentary, you don't strictly need it. I believe that DIT run a post-grad diploma too. Good luck with whatever you decide.

UCC has an excellent evening law degree which involves admission by aptitude test

Surely it is pointless doing the LLB in one of these small "law school" - it will not look good when trying to get a pupillage...

Since when is the Kings Inns a small "law school"? How does anyone get a pupillage without going there?
