I too am interested in this.

PC World are selling emachines for around €260.

Would a netbook play any games like Football Manager? Or is that a stupid question? I know Championship Manager is now a free download would that work?

I saw one today with a 250GB hard drive. Would they be suitable for watching films and tv shows etc? I'm going travelling at the end of the year and the small size of the netbooks really appeals to me.

Wondering if its worth getting one with a disk drive or getting the optional disk drive? Wont need it when travelling me dont thinks but maybe when I get home? Any decent notebooks with a disk drive suppose that pumps up the price:rolleyes:

the dell outlet site occasionally has dell mini 10 netbooks for sale for about 200€ delivered. keep an eye on http://outlet.euro.dell.com/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventorySearch?c=ie&cs=iedfh1&l=en&lob=INSP&s=dfh
    and you might get lucky.
by disk drive I assume that you mean dvd drive? netbooks don't come with built in dvd drives. you can always buy a usb-powered dvd drive on ebay for €40 to €50.

Do Netbooks generally run slower than full size Notebooks?

In short, yes. They are low designed to be as power efficient as possible to get as much battery life as possible. Which means they have low voltage processors, which will be slower than the equivalent laptop/notebook.

That being said though, if you are only using a netbook for very basic things you may not notice much difference between the two.

I find netbooks ok for casual web browsing or simple puzzle games ,most have very basic graphics cards ,not designed for full scale pc games .
I see no point in buying them apart from easy to carry round, and long battery life.
You can buy a celeron cpu , 1.5ghz laptop 15inch screen dvdrw drive for 350 euro approx.

You kind of contradicted yourself there a tad. A lot of people only want a computer to do the basics like browse the web, watch videos, music. Gaming doesn't even come into it. A netbook would do the above and more. While still being very light and small and having a long battery life.
But a €350 celeron powered 15" behemoth of a laptop is not going to be fast, it's not going to be able to game in any shape or form beyond what you already mentioned, and will generally have a dire battery life. And on top of all that it will weigh a tonne. The dvd drive isn't a massive plus either, imo, i haven't used one in months! And that's no joke!

It's all about what you need from a laptop/netbook.

have to agree with previous post, I have an Acer Aspire One. Bought it for the 11.6"screen as 10" IMO is too small. Rarely use the laptop as the thing is too heavy and the battery lasts only 2 hours.
Find I can do most things with the netbook although the laptop is faster processor wise. Even use the netbook hooked up to the Smartboard projection system at work for powerpoint presentations!
    They can only get faster.

NETbooks usually have 9 0r ten inch screens, if theres 2 or more people using it for webacess well the screen is a bit small, although you can plug it in to an lcd monitor thru vga out interface. the acer aspire one 11.6 inch netbook sounds good to me .

I have an Acer Aspire One 10" that i bought recently from Laptopsdirect refurbished section for €232. Its got a guarentee of 6mths and i bought an add on to that to extend it to 12mths just in case. In perfect condition, no marks or scrapes, you never know it was refurbished at all. Delivered straight to the house within days, and have been using it pretty heavily since then.

Cheers did not see the filtering tab

Have narrowed it down to These

However have heard different stories about laptopsdirect  Out of any of the above which are the best value taking in performace etc

Loads of netbooks are windows 7! I found it hard to find the netbook i wanted that had XP on it as a lot of the software i use for my hobby uses XP!

Laptopsdirect refurbished laptops/netbooks are fine. A1 usually means a missing manual or damaged box, the machine itself is brand new!

I would recommend laptopsdirect without a doubt.

Have to say that buying my current netbook(Acer Aspire One) was the first time i had used laptopsdirect, and i was a bit dubious about them too, but overall, they've been pretty great, quick prompt and great customer service.
When i was looking, i decided what i was going to use it for(internet, storing pics, email, pretty basic needs really) and chose mine accordingly. The only thing i didn't think about was connecting the laptop to the tv to watch movies, and if i were buying another i'd make sure it had a VGA port on it. But in saying that, its screen is crystal clear(the bf is constantly robbing it because its better than his expensive Compaq), and its very light and comfortable to use. I'd receommend you look at one that has plenty of memory, or at least the capacity to add more, and a fast processor.

I have a Acer Aspire Timeline 1825PTz (convertible netbook) on the road to me right now.
11.6 '' multi-touch screen (1366 x 768 capacitive display), Win 7 home premium 64bit, 1.3 GHz Dual core CPU, 3GB Ram, 320 Hard drive, Bluetooth 2.1, 5-in-1-card reader, HDMI out... oh and the screen can be reversed to turn it into a Tablet PC... and I cant wait to get my hands on it! :D

Asus eee-pc 1005p. Great netbook, 11 hr battery, on sale in argos atthe min for €250.
    specs:
    10.1 inch
intel n450 processor with integrated graphics 1.66ghz
    11 hr 6cell battery
    L1 cache 24KB
    L2 cache 512KB
    Bios American Megatrends
    1GB ram
    windows 7 starter

If you want any other specs let me know, I have one.

    As for the op systems.
XP is best as it was designed for fully fledged systems which were only around the specs of todays netbooks. Its well patched and fully functional. Unfortunatly it may have some problems with compatability.

Windows 7 starter is dirt. It works but doesnt have any of the fancy features of the full versions (Im running ultimate on my laptop).

If you know a little about computers I'd suggest installing Arch linux, you'll have to find drivers and such but overall its great for netbooks.

    Hope that helps.

Ended up getting the Samsung n140 currently in the middle of charging it as only got it today. Order came quickly about 2 days so happy enough with that. Seems to be a lot of crap on it so have to remove that.

Anyone know where is the best place either online or bricks and mortar to get a cover for Netbooks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

Ok big issue with netbook There was no manual with it. I have plugged in the charging and had it there overnight, netbook was turned of, and it did not charge. There are 5 lights to the right of the keypad and the one to the left of the power button is flashing green and red. However as I dont have the manual dont know what it is? When I turn it on it starts then switches off, maybe due to dead battery?Cannot turn it on now?

Anywhere where I can get the manual as I checked the Samsung site and page fails to load? Also could it be a faulty netbook and better to send it back

Is the battery in correct? Does it turn on with the power supply connected?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,469 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

    some manuals
    http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/office/mobile-computing/netbooks/NP-N140-JA04US/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support

I'd check the power lead connections and socket your using and that the battery's in right

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

Tried that Samsung webpage but it kept timing out when I tried to download the manual.I took out battery and put it back in so not that.Had it turned on and power plugged in and was showing as charging but without touching it it stopped and battery went dead. It starts up then 5 second later it shuts down tried everything but cant get it to charge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,002 ✭✭✭IrishHomer

It should work regardless of battery providing AC lead is plugged in. I leave my batery out some of the time in the house to try and save wastage of the battery.

When you slide the power button over to turn it on you have to make sure you slide it over fully and leave it fully over until it lights up i noticed this can take a couple of seconds to happen to power up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

Power button does go all the way over and have got the windows welcome screen but thats as far as i get then it powers off. Rang laptops direct and may return it for them to test it
