Volkswagen Golf GTI - Looking to change

I currently drive a 05D Volkswagen Golf GTI and i am looking to change and upgrade to a 08D with low tax and Diesel.

I am currently looking at another Golf GT sport or a Volvo S40 . I would much rather stick to a hatchback model but am open to options.

Anyone else got any good reliable makes with a bit of poke as well?

BMW 118d or 120d... or 123d - they have super low emissions I think.

165g CO2 for a Mini John Cooper Works apparently, so 24% VRT and €447 per year tax. Not too bad, but I'd say you'd be looking €40k + landed.

An 08D?? Thats a bit snobbish

That's not so bad at all actually, I would have expected it to be a lot worse.

Older supercharged one's were a lot worse CO2 wise

You mean downgrade. A 2 litre turbo petrol with 197bhp is a lot better than the run of the mill diesels you'll pick up with low emissions.

I drive allot so looking to change to a Diesel with the same power or near enough. I want to save on the cost of Petrol and tax which is why i am looking at anything from 08D upwards.

Also i do like the Mini Coopers but i would get slated from many friends if they saw me driving it
    Thanks for the reply's.

I'll be trading my car in against so anything from €18,000. If i see a car i like and it cost extra well i'll go the extra mile.

I've searched Carzone and rang a couple of dealers but some of deals on offer seem crazy to me.

A 05 GTi will probably get around 12k on a trade in. That's 6k to buy an 18k car. Not too many 175+bhp diesels in 2008 for that kind of money. Remember also that 6,000 will buy a lot of petrol and tax for your current car!!

I rang one garage and they offered me €10,000 on a trade in against a 08D Golf GT Diesel. I told them thanks but no thanks.

What type of mileage are you doing? It might take a really long time for the lower running costs to make a dent in the cost of upgrading.

Id probably average 500km per week at the moment and its costing me. I do like the Mini but just not sure it will be great for comfort and long distance. I like the Volvo s40 and also Golf GT.

i could of had my choice of 2005 GTi's last year for 12-12.5k privately, including one DSG version. to be honest i think you'd be lucky to get 12k on a trade infor an 05 GTi.

there a cracking car and a great all rounder, great value in them tbh.
depending on your budget i would try get a 320d M-Sport or Octavia VRs but i dont think 18k will get you a 2008 model in them, may be wrong though?

PS - dont get bogged down on "one garage offered me 12k" and "the other garage offered me 10k" approach as its the cost to change that counts, so one garage may be giving you a lower trade in but a better discount or retail price on the new car if you get me.

    What about a '08 Lexus IS220d?

2.2 litre diesel outputting 175 bhp which is nice and pokey (my boss bought a '07 last week and I took it for a quick spin).

    Tax for a '08 would be €447.

I just bought a 2006 GTi with 50k on the clock privately for 11.5k. Is in nice nick too with a service history. 10k trade in isn't that off the wall.

I drove a Mini Cooper and didn't actually get as much stick as I thought I'd get.... What do most of your friends drive?

A Stage 2 JCW is 220bhp and will do 0-60 in about 6 seconds and they absolutely stick to the ground. Much better car to drive than what I'm driving now.

Your friends will shut up once you've burnt them.

As already mentioned the JCW isn't actually that bad tax wise

Thanks but i don't like Renault or Peugeot so its a no go.

When i said €18,000 as a budget i ment with trading my GTI i would probably put a max of €8/9,000 not €18,000 plus GTI as a trade. I bought my current car for €21,500 a few years back and at the moment i don't really fancy spending the same again in the current market.

I was looking at Volvo s40 and Golf GT this model.... but i didn't like what they offered me for a trade in for this.

I'm in agreement with eoin here.

Nearly every car mentioned here sounds like a downgrade to me and you're also handing over money.
Unless you plan on keeping the next car you buy for a long time, I don't see how you'll be saving money by getting a low tax diesel as a replacement.

Unless there's some niggling issues with the GTi, I'd keep it.

I like the GTi and certainly didn't expect the price of 04/05 to be around the 10-12k mark. Madness!

Id do about 500km a week easily so petrol wise it goes through it. If i change the plan would be to keep the car for 5 years but we all say that.

I'm looking at getting a Diesel 08D for cheap tax and fuel with the miles i do every week. I dont want to spend a fortune on car either again, i'm already losing trading in the GTI like so many others have.

Im half watching the football at the time of writing this so somebody else can check the figures

If your doing about 500km's (~300 miles) per week id say your golf is averaging about 34mpg? (if your sitting in heavy traffic most of the day the following all goes out the window)

    Your golf has a 55 litre tank (12 gallons). 34 mpg x 12 gallons = 408 miles (650 kms).
500 kms per week x 50 weeks a year = 25,000 per year (everybody has at least 1 holiday :D)
    25,000km per year / 650 km per tank = 38.4 tanks a year

    Assuming petrol @ €1.30 per litre it takes €71.50 to fill from empty (55 x 1.30). 38.4 times a year = €2,745 a year in petrol

If you got a TDI golf the same 55 litres (12 gallons) will give you about 50mpg. 50 x 12 gallons = 600 miles (960 kms)
    25,000 / 960 km per tank = 26 tanks a year

    Assuming diesel @ €1.20 per litre it takes €66.00 to fill from empty (55 x 1.20). 26 times a year = €1,584 a year in diesel

So a TDI golf will be €1161 cheaper in fuel over the petrol GTI a year

You need to work out if you the cost to change is worth the €1161 saving in fuel over the year.......

(The above ignores any savings in tax or insurance)

    Edit
2000th post. Hope it was worth it :D

    Well worth it :)

I think i will probably end up changing to a Diesel.

A decent low tax diesel with 170bhp+ will cost you at least 6k with your golf gti.

    How is it worth it?

It will take you a minimum of 3 years to claw back even a cent with fuel, tax savings etc! 3 years!!! Thats a long time.

300 miles a week is nothing to worry about, if it was a day then you might have to change, but weekly thats only barely over average milage.

You will be pushing it too to get 50mpg from a higher powered diesel.I have a Fabia vrs with just under 170bhp and with mixed driving its around 45-48mpg.Thats with the old 1.9tdi which is alot better on juice than the new 2.0tdi and the Fabia is lighter too than the cars mention Octavia, Accord etc.

I would keep to Gti myself or sell it and get a 5k 1.9tdi runaround if you want to spare money.Your just wasting it now imo with this idea.

You'd have to be going very lightly indeed to get 650 Km out of the tank on the GTi...

TBH id also say 600 km's is do'able if you were crusing most of the time on the motorway*

I wouldn't say i get anymore then 30mpg in the GTI at the moment and i'm spending about €65 filling up nearly every 8/9 days.

The Seat Leon i was looking at is a 1.9TDI 105bhp and can do 60mpg.

Yeah i know, its quite slugish alright and takes a while to get some speed :). I was looking at a Golf TDI 170bhp, just not prepared to pay the money again with the current marget. As some have said you've had your fun with the GTI.

I saw a 06 Fabia Vrs on donedeal last week for 6.5k, remapped one wouldnt be far behind your current Gti.If you could get a similar deal you would be on the right track imo.

I can see your point OP, I changed from a 1.8 Vtec to a 2.0 TDI and was blown away by the fuel savings at one stage I was filling the car once every two weeks.

I know theres no science to the above, but it just feels better to be able to stretch visits to the pumps no matter what, I'd say the fuel figures for the GTI would scare the bejesus out of me.

Have you looked at the SEAT EXEO ?

Op, test drive the Leon before you decide. That engine is about as agricultural as you can get in a road vehicle, and is far removed from your GTI.
