I have a HD box which is currently just being used separately with no card in. Mainly used as a freesat box and its handy for BBC HD and ITV HD as they are on the EPG especially with the World Cup coming up.

However, I was surprised that when trying to access ,manually added channels, such as "FIVE" it says you must insert your skyviewing card. On the normal sky plus box or std digibox you don't need any card in.

I was surprised at this which seems to mean you have to keep subbing to sky to watch Other Channels on a HD box.

Maybe there is something I am missing here?

You've manually added the wrong version of FIVE, ie the scrambled one.
Use the version at 10773, H.

You can view other channels (FTA ones) without a card in the box but its a PIN code related issue. You need to go to the PIN/Parental etc menu. Enter PIN (with card in box, and hopefully you know your PIN!). Remove all parental restrictions such as access to adult channels etc. and save these changes. Now press the Blue button. It disables PIN areas (greys out tabs) dealing with other channels etc. You should now be able to view other channels without a card.

thanks. Only thing is I don't have a card matched to this box. This box gave me problems a few months ago but I got it fixed and its now perfect. In meantime I decided to keep it as a UK EPG/BBC/ITV HD box and my multiroom box is now just a std box.

If I put one of my other cards in this box temporarily do you know if I can then make the changes you refer to?

If not I suppose I will just have to live without C5 on that box,not a major prob.

Not quite sure if the following is correct. Did you have a card paired to the box at any stage to access premium channels (Sky movies, sports etc.)?

If this is so, you may need that card and its PIN code to access PIN/parental menu section for the box. If not, I'd say any card and associated PIN will allow you access to this section. I had a new Sky HD box that had not been paired to any card and I used my UK FTV card to remove restrictions when accessing Other Channels. If you have never changed the PIN number its normally the last four digits of the Sky viewing card number.
