Temporary Freesat setup in Wexford

    Hi guys,

My bro wants to watch the World Cup matches whilst renting a house for a week or 2 in Wexford. (not sure exactly where!). He says there's a TV and DVD player there but no Aerial/dish. I suggested getting a portable dish (tripod type) and bringing his existing freesat box with him. However, I've read on boards that these camper-van mini-dishes aren't to be recommended. He could get a full size dish but obviously he can't go mounting it to the roof, as the house is not his.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated!

The dish doesn't have to be mounted on the roof. I set up one for a neighbour with the dish at ground level in the back garden with the bracket mounted on a solid building block placed on the ground. Once you have sight of the satellite, dish height is not a factor. Depending on the location you might be able to work with a more 'imaginative' temporary option.

I once used a camping satellite dish clamped to a spade stuck in the ground when camping for two weeks. That did the job. Once you line up correctly, you will be surprised at the potential temporary locations and solutions available.

Of course for permanent viewing a good solid installation is required, but temp solutions can be an option in specific circumstances.

The camping dish is not suitable as a permanent solution but may cover the bases for something temporray like this. Wexford being on the east cost makes a 45 cm dish more likely to work.

Brilliant, thanks guys. I might just tell him to chance the camping dish option so. Before I hit ebay to find one, anywhere in Ireland (bricks and mortar or online) I should look?

    Thanks

    A Tv but no aerial!

That finding satellites is all very well if you are good at it especially with a camper van style dish.

Why doesnt he just bring a High gain portable aerial and plug it into the back of that TV.

    RTE have all the matches.

If he wants a new toy he could get the sigmatek DVBR 520 DTT box for €60 and that will work for him and easy to set up. He then has something that he will possibly use elsewhere rather than a campervan dish.

    Just to be clear,

I wasn't specifically recommending the camping dish option - merely indicating what could be possible. Im my case I had one available and it worked for the length of time required.

Seeing as the original poster will be looking for a dish to use with an already existing stb, a more sturdy dish like the second hand one suggested would be a better option. It can still be mounted wherever correct line of sight can be obtained. If you had one readily available, a camping dish would be handy to test a proposed dish location.

It depends on what you want to spend, just a dish, or a complete DIY FTA set-up for about €80 or a freesat kit for a bit more.

Seeing as it is a temp trial situation that is being proposed, I would just go for the metal dish suggested and give it a try - providing you have line of sight available.

A bit of skill in aligning the dish will be required for any option.

Thanks for this advice, he actually has that Sigmatek unit already which is great! I just never even considered it as another option! What are the chances that a high gain portable aerial will do the job? Any suggestions/link for a suitable aerial to buy (that won't break the bank!)

    Thanks again

    Wexford is Mt Leinster.

I'd suggest a High Gain Wideband aerial.

You may get away with a amplified indoor UHF aerial (something with about 20-30db gain).

Black Briar is down that way so may be able to best advise.
