It would be some kind of soft sampler and whatever samples they wanna choose, not a specific software really.

    ie: anything like battery/kontakt etc..etc..

oh ok my friend does weird short dark animations and visual concepts and he said if can make really cool music like that he would use mine ,

so would i be safe getting battery?? ill be getting logic studio a so would i be able to lad the samples from bettery in to ultrabeat so i can use the sequencer ??

I wouldn't buy anything until you've got Logic and are familiar with the samples you get with that. May well do the job for you.

NIN's stuff isn't really about what samples or sequencer he uses, it's the way he layers and effects things...

Grab yourself a reasonably recent version of Reason and you'll be able to get pretty damn close to his drum sounds I reckon.

He uses everything. He's definitely a Logic fan. He spends a lot of time working on sounds, making his own. No secret to his sound- just lots of time and work! And as was mentioned above, layering is the key...

I'm fairly sure he uses a selection of things with a load of tweaks and distortion and delay and layering added for good measure.

Specifically from the album The Slip, the intro drums to the song 'Discipline' come from a plug-in called Addictive Drums - and the main intro beat to the song 'The Four of Us Are Dying' comes from a Battery 3 factory preset.
