Applying for another job

Hey all, need a bit of help here.
I'm 20 and I work 10.5 hours a week in a chain of a bookshop and while the work is grand and the pay is good, I'm desperate for more work and hours. Unfortunately it's not possible and most part timers are having to take hours off. Now while I appreciate having a small job I'm wondering can I send out CV's to other shops and places to try get a new job without getting in trouble or running the risk of losing my current job? Am I breaking any rules here, should I talk it over with my manager? She's quite nice and usually very understanding when it's comes to time off for college and holidays and stuff. Basically what I'm asking is, is there a certain procedure to follow in these situations or is it completely against the rules?
    Thanks very much.

Mention to her that you would love more hours but you know that's a non runner so if you found a suitable position elsewhere could you get a reference. You are breaking no rules, most folks leave one job for another.

Some employment contracts can stipulate that you don't work for anybody else, however, that is highly unlikely for a part time job.

However, a few issues come to mind.

    1. Have they ever needed you to come in a short notice when it wasn't your allotted time? i.e. to cover someone else's shift. Do they expect this?

    2. They probably wouldn't be best pleased if the other job was for another bookshop for obvious reasons.

Assuming you're not contracted to only work for your current employer then there isn't much of an issue per say as long as you can meet your employer's needs. But that's not to say they'll take it badly if they find out from somebody else (jealous co-worker?!?). So, you may still want to tell or ask permission from your existing employer.

You'll also probably want to get some of your tax credits, tax band allocated to your new job to cut down on tax payable.

    Good luck!

Sorrry, you're probably right. I read it that he wanted to keep his current job and get another part time job also. Okay ... I need sleep.

What RoverJames said... Although, I probably wouldn't mention looking for a new job before you get the new job, or you may find your hours reduced... to zero! ;)
