Windows 7 slowdown

Getting quite annoyed with this. Starts up fine, runs for a few hours and then all of a sudden it gets really slow. As in switching between tabs takes ages, audio will glitch a little and bringing the taskbar up from autohide will have a serious lag. Even shutting down will take ages.

It wasn't a clean install, it was an update from Vista. (Systems specs: Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit), Quad Core CPU at 2 GHz, 6 GB RAM (only 5.75 usable)).

Does anyone know what could be causing this slowdown? I usually am only running Google Chrome (maybe 11 or so tabs), an explorer window or two and Media Player Classic Homecinema.

Probably some scheduled operation kicking in. What AV software are you running? How often is it set to scan... If you pull up the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) when it slows down, go to the Processes tab and sort by CPU time, you might get some indication as to what program is causing the slowdown.

I run AVG and Avast (both free).

The Avast doesn't autoscan and I normally turn the AVG off when it starts just so it won't take up too much CPU power.

I'll wait for it to act up again and try the task manager thing. Ironically, it hasn't misbehaved today (but I did turn it off earlier when I went out).

You need to pick one virus scanner and uninstall the other.. Personally I use AVG, but having said that I havent heard anything bad about Avast...

AVG, on default install runs a scan EVERY DAY. When installing, I usually change this to run once week. It may me this that is kicking off every day and slowing you down. If you choose to keep AVG, then check this. I'm not sure how often Avast runs scans by default, but you should check this if you choose to keep Avast.

Thanks for the reply (and sorry for the delay :o).

I've managed to find the program at fault, it shows up at about 20% of CPU when the problem begins and continues to climb. I can terminate it using Resource Monitor but Task Manager doesn't see it for some reason.

Try turning off the service as they suggest on this page.
