East Coast of Ireland

Myself and my better half (both from Cork) have a track work in the road to the west coast, West Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo etc. We usually try and get away for a weekend a few times a year.

We are on our usual trek to our second favourite Irish city, Galway, in a few weeks but are thinking about heading to the east coast for the weekend before we go.

We don't want to go to Dublin and are thinking about Wicklow or Wexford. Have they anything to compete with the joys of the west coast ?

I would always choose the West and South West over the East but if push comes to shove I might stay in the Ferrycarrig in Wexford.

I dont really like the Industrialised commuter belts of the North East so its really Dublin and South that would appeal to you I think.

You can make a nice spin out through Dungarvan, into Tramore, cross over on the Passage East Ferry and head into Wexford for the night. You can always head out to a nice beach a little North of Wexford, weather permitting. Its where they filmed some of the Saving Private Ryan scenes.

Hook lighthouse and the surrounding area are stunning and worth a trip.

Up in Enniscorthy, there is a pub there called the antique. I have driven past it dozens of times and it looks like a really nice place to sit and have a pint.

if you make it up there, have one for me:D

Coming from the southwest,I would start with 2 nights at the Cliff house hotel at ardmore.
It has a michelin star restaurant and is a beautifull 5 star hotel in a lovely harbour vilage.

Then I'd head north and hit Dunbrody house more foody heaven courtesy of Keven Dundon and a gateway to a nice area.

North again to Marfield house near Gorey, giving you the chance to again either do coastal spots of north wexford or head inland and explore.
Or just outside Arklow if you want to go self catering for a change,I'd highly recommend moneylands farm .

Finally about another 10 miles north of there into co Wicklow,I'd end the trip by staying at The brook lodge on the edge of the wicklow mountains.
It's a perfect base to explore the wicklow way walk or head up to glendalough.

    I hope that helps.
