    I'm getting a new MBP 15" i7 8gb ram

Its my first apple computer and i've been reading a lot of conflicting posts on how best to set it up for my primary use which will mainly be for audio aps such as pro-tools and possibly some video aps like Avid, final cut or After Effects.

I would like to ask for help or advice from anyone who has experience in this area with macs

    Thanks :)

    Thanks for your help :D

I'll mainly be using it for video and audio editing projects, but there will also be elements of audio recording of music and VO's.

What would be the best way to set up the mac and would things like performing a fresh install of the os leaving out un-needed elements of the os and creating an AV partition on my HDD be good/bad ideas??

what size harddrive is on it?
Generally theres no need to partition the hard drive anymore(maybe two users would suffice if you want to keep everything seperate)

The os is fine no need for a fresh install 10.6 is a fairly light os compared to its predocessors...generally audio/video projects should be kept on an external harddrvie for protection of the project and to keep the machine running at its optimal level and get the most out of your quadcore processor...are you using any external monitors, audio/video equipment?

Its a 500Gb HDD (7200rpm). At the moment i've only got a MBox Hooked up nd i sometimes need to capture video via firewire from the camera and i'll be running one external Monitor.

ya @ 7200 rpm, 8gb and i7 youll be fine with just the standard installation of the os...I would just make sure you have sufficient external hard drive storage to keep the performance of your mbp going
