    Hi Elbarco,
uploaded it earlier, a little bit of hassle, but impressed with the results, wrote a quick review so the non-developer public could get a feel for it.

Seems to be humming away nicely. A bit of playing about now and I'll be happy.

Can someone post a working link for both downloads or instead PM me?

How long it took all together, upgrading and restoring.
    Thanks.

I'm not sure tbh as I kinda went off and came back. Restoring takes the most time. Depends on how much content you have. I think it took about 20-30 minutes for me.

So it is only for Mac at the moment? Is it?

You need the iTunes 9.2 beta, which is Mac only at the moment, so yes.

In and around that time for me too. Kicked it off, went for a smoke and it was booting up as I got back.

damn, got all excited when i saw this, but mac only for the moment

Its out officially in about 2 weeks anyway. Windows users can upgrade once iTunes 9.2 is out. Apple are obviously going to give OS X software priority. :)

I'm not too sure if it's ok to be posting links like that here. If you google "ios 4 gm ipsw" or something similar you'll find it without too many problems.

Once you have the .ipsw file you can plug your iphone into your mac, browse to it from itunes 9.2 and then click the restore button while holding the alt key - this will give you an dialog box to choose the restore file. Select the ipsw file you've downloaded and away you go.

Probably widely available on most torrent sites by now. I had tondo a bit of diggigng yesterday but I'd say it'd be okay now. The news that it was compatible was only new enough when I went looking. Supply and demand and all that.

Because, legally, it could be dubious. I'd prefer to keep them off the forum, thanks.

That was my line of thought alright - glad to hear I wasn't just being awkward

Well I take the point, but...

It would be legal to ask a developer friend to put it on, for sure. I saw no restrictions on the download site. After all they are not selling the upgrade.

    Hi ElBarco
Many thanks for the direction given to me in your post. It was a great help and also within the laws of the forum as stated. Thanks also to the mods (lackofcolour) for keeping the whole thing running smoothly.
    Cheers

im currently jailbroken on 3.1.2 , at what point do i rejailbreak, or will installing the ios4 break my jailbreak?
    thanks

    backup your stuff as usual
go to itunes, press shift and restore
    thats it
there is no jailbreak for windows yet only mac
if you want jailbreak, hold off, or you can have a look and downgrade again

im getting an error message "the firmware file is not compatible"
its a .ipsw file , and seems to be legit.
"iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore" is the name of it.
    any ideas?

Wrong file. The correct one is iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ispw

That's for the 3GS. Installed on 3 3GS iPhones on iTunes 9.2 beta with no issues

It's the same file regardless of whether you are running Windows or OS X, as long as you have a version of iTunes 9.2 (beta or not). I think 9.2 was released the other day anyway.

Yeh I got the new iTunes. The Thing is. This just bricked my iPhone (o:
I can not switch it on. Nada, noting. It is just blank. No connect to iTunes even.

Now I do have a dodgy fraid cable. I just hope It packed in as I was installing this file. Coincidence I know, and very unlikely. But il see for sure tomorrow. I have another charger in work.

That worked amazingly well. What worries me is the bit where it said it was contacting Apple.

That was relatively painless (luckily, only when it was started did I worry about bricking the phone :o) - the process was quick enough. The installation of iTunes 9.2 on Windows was a bit buggy, and took a while to install on Windows 7 (even though it's the final product, not a beta).

First impressions are that Folders are a great (if overdue) feature: I've gone down from 6 screens of apps to just 2 screens.

The new mailbox is a good bit better: Thread view is much easier to read.

Can't really test multitasking until apps are updated. But it works well with the Apple apps (Mail, Safari, Clock, etc.) it's easy to switch between the applications and it brings you back to your main screen.

(I can't believe I couldn't wait until Monday to install it)

thats not a problem, it does that just to sign the firmware, if you were try to downgrade for example it wouldnt let you...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Gauge

Is there a definitive list out there of what features are enabled on the iPhone 3G? It seems like very few are. I knew multitasking wouldn't be but it seems wallpapers/folders aren't available either :(

    Installation was incredibly simple though!

Is jailbreak available for this already? Which one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭Stuxnet
