Hi All, am currently 27 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I'm really confused regarding the sleeping options. We are thinking of getting a travel system with a carrycot (though this is €200 extra) would this do as a slepping option for the first while, also is there any benefits to cribs/moses baskets. We cant fit a cot in our room but will probably use one from 6 months when the baby moves into her own room. Can anyone advise what they are using? I'm a really heavy sleeper so co-sleeping would make me nervous that I could crush her.

    Hi tmeos

I have the same problem, can't fit a cot in my room! I ended up going for the moses basket as a friend of mine is getting rid of them. People usually opt not to get them as they are expensive, but I have seen large ones in Dublin City for 20 something euro including stand.

Personally I find my moses basket great. I am single and have a double bed, so I put her on one side, and I sleep on the other. Works fantastically for me and is so nice when you are exhausted and not feeling like getting up out of bed every 2 mins. (Especially great after labour!!)

One of the cribs might be good if you are planning on putting baby in his/her own room at 6 months. You would get 6 months out of a crib, while I think i will only get 4 months out f my moses basket.

I loved my moses basket because newborns sleep so much it's handy to be able to carry it round with you and not have to bring the baby upstairs with you when you want to put them down for a nap.

Apart from that a cot from day 1 is perfectly fine.

I'm moving my 15 week old baby into her own room at the moment and have the moses basket in the cot til she gets used to sleeping on her own (although she usually sleeps through the night!).

    How about this.... http://www.hipbaby.ie/amby-natures-nest-baby-cradle-p-376.html

A bit modern! But I would love one for my new baby only I had already invested in a cot.

I have Saoirse in a crib, shes 5 months now and she still has plenty of room. They are nice and sturdy too thats what i like about them.

The carrycots aren't designed for regular use as the mattresses are too thin & hard.

I used an Armsreach cosleeper cot (the Mini) for my boy. He fit in it until he was 7.5 months and then went straight to the cotbed. It's pricey enough at €200, but it lasts longer than a Moses basket, collapses up for easy storage, can be used as a travel cot, and attaches firmly to the side of the bed so you can cosleep without actually having baby in the bed with you. This is my first baby and I haven't yet been put off having more, so I reckon I'll get another 2 uses out of it, well worth the money - probably the best buy we made (and no, I don't work for them or anything!). We got ours from a local independent nursery shop, but you can also order them from cots.ie.

Meant to add that it is very compact and should fit in the same space that a Moses basket would take up.

To be honest, id give the crib a miss.

We had Caoimhe in her moses basket until she was 4 or 5 months, put her into a crib and she had to go into a cot after about 2 months of that because she was too big for it. She was trying to turn in her sleep etc and couldnt so she was waking. She went into the cot in her own room at about 7 months and has slept through the night ever since

Can you let us know where you seen the Moses baskets for 20 euro please? Or PM me, thanks.

My MIL has offered the use of some sort of swinging crib, I was thinking of using this downstairs and a moses basket upstairs. I'm still deciding on a travel system, but will probably get one with a carrycot and use this when staying over in relatives houses for the night.

When it gets big enough I'll look into cots, but plan on looking on adverts.ie and gumtree.ie for second hand cots and just buy a new mattress for it. I also noticed that Ikea have a cot for €50 or so, but its too early for me to look into it yet.

A travel cot is one of the best investments that you will make.
If you get one with a bassinet it is more comfie for a small baby too.
We had a huge moses basket so she was able to stay in it until she was making attempts to sit up on her own.
She did not last too long in her pram as she could not see out the sides and was convinced she was missing something:)

I pmed ecaf...but thought I would post here too for others.

Saw the large moses baskets in Guinneys on North Earl/Talbot street in Dublin city. They were no more than 26 euro. I can't remember whenther the stand came with it or if it cost extra.

Can vouch for them as the moses basket I have is one of the baby elegance ones, and my friend bought it there. Lovely basket and roomey enough that it's big without being too big for a newborn to feel secure.

Its a misconception that moses baskets are expensive, mothecare have about 5 different ones all in the 40euro range, anyway, most people will just borrow one one and get a new matress. But the matress can work out as expensive, so if your planning more kids I go for a new moses basket. my ds was in his until just under five months ,but we bought a really big one, again only 89 euros in mothercare.

89 euro is expensive for something people only get a few months out of.
My cot and cot mattress cost that!

+1 Bogtotty on the arms reach co-sleeper.

I don't work for them either, but since getting one for my little lady I am constantly recommending them :o, I think they're a great idea :)

I absolutely love being able to reach over during the night and pop Rose's soother back in or rub her tum to settle her, rather than having to get out of bed (I found the moses's basket was higher and I couldn't reach up into it from the bed)

A new one will set you back the same extra that you're going to pay for the pram & will last you longer.
Though I got mine second hand for €150, which wasn't bad as that was with 3 x sheets & they're an extra €15 each.
I like that its wider than your standard moses basket so she can have a good stretch in it, but it's not as wide as a cot so handy if you're tight on space.

If you do go for a Moses basket, I would say please check and make sure the fabric covering on it removes for washing.
I had Rose in mine one day and she did a very unlady like projectile poo all over the outer covering on it.
To remove it to put in the wash I had to unscrew 2 x bolts that were holding on the hood

+ for the co-sleeper. Although its much pricier than a moses basket or crib.

When I was pregnant I wanted a crib because they are just so cute but was convinced that I wouldn't get too long out of it and didn't want to waste the money.

We had a moses basket at first which I wasn't too mad about because it just felt seemed so delicate that it would tip over the second anything touched it (irrational new mums fear!) but as my sister had her ds just 3 months before I had my dd she gave me her co-sleeper when my nephew grew out of it, which was quicker than I would have thought (Hes a fast growing big boy!) But I got possibly 5/6 months use of it with Kate. And theres nothing like being able to just reach over and give her a rub and pat her back asleep!!

Although if I were to do it all again I would have her in her cot from the start and possibly use a moses basket or just her pram for downstairs. We got a second hand bedroom set including cotbed, changing table with storage underneath and wardrobe for €150!!! And it was in perfect condition!! So I'd recommend to any mums to be to check gumtree etc for any deals. I went out to the house to look at the furniture just to appease my mother as I knew I only wanted new things for my little angel when she came along but once I seen the furniture it looked as though it was brand new!! I was delighted :)

Can't believe you all got so long out of your moses baskets my little girl only got 6 weeks out of it, then she just look bit to big and use to hit her arms off side. She loves her cot bed now but seem so small lol. I love her carrycot in her pram she has all her naps in that

Mine was the same. 8 weeks and he was way too big for his moses basket. He slept in his cot from 3 weeks on at night and only used the moses basket at home during the day until he was about 7/8 weeks.

my little girl is going on 13 weeks (this sunday) and still in hers. She likes to sleep up close to the side though...is that a bad thing? I know they say about suffocation, but she just likes to feel secure!

Saoirse is now 16 weeks and still in her moses basket in the cot... she loves the comfort of the close sides... gonna try and just put her in normal cot on her own now tomorrow night and see how we go!

ah Elisha sleeps with her arms either up above her head or to the side she loves space always stretching so maybe that why she likes cot better. I love it though as i can see her face when i'm in my bed as i have the cot rite besides my bed

I found their prices rather high.
Are you associated with the shop?

We got 6 weeks out of our crib! She had plenty of room in it but she kept moving over to the edge of the crib and hanging her arm out which I was afraid I'd break scurrying around half asleep in the night and I'm sure it wasn't good for her little joints either!

Anyway, popped her in a cot and she was fine. No problems at all switching her over.

If I had my time over I don't think I'd bother with the crib. A cot is perfectly acceptable from birth.

If you are planning on just replacing the mattress, check in TK Maxx before you spend a fortune on one. I saw cot-bed mattresses in there the other day for 40 Euro!

I think that we may get another month out of our moses basket (we have the travel cot for downstairs)...he was 18 weeks last Friday...if I was doing it again I would still use the same system...it worked!
