I used Hal Higdon intermediate for my first half-marathon, the Runners World UK 1:50+ schedule seems pretty decent for a first half too.

Just getting ready to register for the Longford Half Marathon at end of August.

Going to try the recommended schedule and see how I get on.

Loving running, hopefully I keep it up.

Think im going to do the Galway Mini Marathon at the end of June too even though the schedule doesnt say to do a 10km until the 9th week. IM sure it wont destroy my time too much?

I've done 4 5k's, a 10k, and a 5 mile so far. My next challenge is doing the Dublin half in September and I'm starting the Hal Higdon novice plan on Monday!
Will be setting up a training log here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 765 ✭✭✭yungwan

i'm on for my first in the Dublin City Series Half Sept 18th. Starting my 12 week plan on the 20th June. That gives me 1 week buffer gap in case of sickeness/hols etc

Can't wait! Best of luck to you all.

i wonder is there enough people attempting there first half to have a " Half marathon support thread" ill leave that decision up to the mods before i create one!

Id love one, starting my training for it on Monday for Galway Half on 27th August. (I have only 11 weeks but I might skip the first week )

I registered today - god help me :)

I took a breat for this week and I miss it! Waiting on my new runners to be delivered (as my old ones are wore out and offer very little support and basically just kept with them until after my first 10k on Monday)

I would love a "half Marathon support thread" for all of us starting Monday and beyond. In the past I have always found support threads a great motivation and er... support!

It would certainly spur me on ;)

    +1 here!

Very good idea ! It is something that is missing from the forum. A lot of people will be looking to half marathon training over the summer.I used the following last summer, worked well:http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244-258-12006-0,00.html

    Warning:
Successful completion of target time or general satisfaction for half marathon experience may lead to one to progressing to training for MARATHON

I think it is a great idea being a person who has yet to step up to the marathon this is one thing i feel the forum lacks is anything regarding training not really based around the marathon. I am sure there would be a fair few experienced half marathon people who wouldn't mind mentoring this thread (maybe check the best of 10 thread to get an idea of who)

Hmmm I can see this happening alright!! Its such a buzz and such an achievement when you do each stage ( I imagine, Ive only done a 10k) Id say if I manage to complete this half marathon ill want to go the full hog!!

Hopefully I complete this stage first though!! :)

I started the Hal Higdon Novice Half Marathon Plan yesterday, having followed his 10k plan to get me ready for the Dublin Women's Mini Marathon. I'm going on holidays though in July so I'm not entering any race yet. I'll just follow this plan up until my holiday and then I'll probably start it again when I come back early August. So I'll be looking for a half marathon in Decemberish time!

I'd love too see a thread set up for the Half Marathon preparation too. I'd need loads of advice from the experts. Posters on boards have really helped me up to this point already! :)

    Good luck everyone!

Its a sensible approach and its the one I took too. Get confidence from doing the half first. The first half you do will feel like a "marathon", progress from there. Best of luck with the training :)

Very like Hal's advanced program. What time did you get using the RW program?
I'm making the Dublin Half my target race so I'd be interest in a thread as well.

Yes thats how I plan to do it- do the 10 k successfully, enjoy it, so double it for challenge.
If I complete and enjoy the half Ill do the full, but only If i want to do it.

I hit 1:27 doing it, previous half was 1:3x. Its not the half that it'll progress but also your shorter distance, e.g. 5mile time. Gringo78 and myself both followed it last year and both saw good improvement in our race times, across distances.

Its not about one following one specific half marathon plan, but rather the elements that make it.

e.g. For the half the specific run needed each week in training is tempo runs (The pace is set between your CURRENT half and 10mile pace).

This can be combined with interval work, aerobic runs, and building up a long run (preferably over hills) upto 13miles.

13 miles sounds so scary reading it in the above post! im starting my plan tomorrow anyways...im about to go do prob my last heavy weights session for the next 12 weeks!
