Should I lie about my availability to get a summer job? College student here...

I study in America during the school year but im broke as a joke and thus need some job, any job for to buy booze, smokes and generally keep my sanity....going from living in my own house and being 100% financially and socially independent to having to bum Majors from my grandad is getting me down. :(

so, in order to get a job in a place with a high turnover (Gamestop, Starbucks, McDonalds, chain-supermarkets etc.) should I lie about my availability? i.e should I do the whole "Im taking a year out from college to build up cash" thing)?

OR should I be honest and say I wont be here during the semester but that I'd absolutely come back during Christmas and future summers?

the catch here is that the scholarship I have is ****ing killer in terms of a CV, so I'd like to put that down -- but obviously it's a dead giveaway that I'm going to want to continue my education abroad.

(though I could explain the "year-break" as resulting from a death in the family / wanting to help my surviving grandparent cope etc [yes I have no ethics, IM BROKE!])

I can also tell a half-lie and say I'm only going to be taking a break of one semester since "my grandparent needs help but insists I return to my studies...so I'm meeting him halfway"

what do you think is in my best interest?

Being that future employment from wherever would definite be a plus (seasonal work would be ideal), I've got to be cut-throat about it, imo..

If its just a temporary part-time job you don't give a s**t about and have no intention of working there in the future then just say you're on a year out. Then "decide" to go back to college in september. That's my 2c.

I wouldn't mention it unless they specifically ask you if you'll still be around come September. If they do just say you're unsure and then, as Demonon said, decide to go back to college. If it's just a sales assistant type job I really don't see an issue. It's not like you're applying to a management role or anything serious.

When I was in college I lied about not going back to college to get a job. So when the time came I said that I was going back as I thought long and hard over the summer and that college was for me. Boss at the time was no impressed but he was a total a**hole so I didn't care.

We always expected a rash of students to go back to college in September each year - in the good times that is.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

Don't be honest, being honest will fail you, it failed me in the past. Not honorable or anything, but to hell with everyone else, time to be selfish OP.

I'm a manager in a shop hiring at the moment for a permanent position and I wouldn't consider even interviewing anybody who has completed a year in college but not graduated...every student is lying when I ask them saying they aren't going back to college when I know they are.

90% management would be the same when considering CVs.I would suggest you be honest as a lot of places would be looking for summer cover to just cover holidays etc for other staff but would not have the hours available once hols are over at the end of the summer
