Right lads I am heading into 6th year next year and am aiming to be an accountant.

Now I love accounting and am good at it but I don't know what type of accountant I want to be.

My teacher says that there is a Management accountant or a chartered accountant.

Which one in your opinion is better and what does each title entail?

Finally is there much money to be made in accounting? I'll be honest, although I am a hard worker I do have a mercenary side to me.

    Cheers lads.

    Mike.

Since your only in 6th year you've got the whole of college to decide if pure accounting is for you. My advice is get a summer job in an accountancy related job and see for your self. What you learn from the leaving cert about accounting is worlds apart from what accountants do day to day.

Generally chartered accountancy is the more popular route.

Hey Mike you sound similar to when I was doing my LC - however accounting is very different when you work in it (I only lasted one year before I joined banking)

Obviously I am unable to comment on what both types entail since I am neither qualified in either however I can talk about the money aspect.

While your training, first year you will probably earn €20k (average) and for the other two years it will increase with exam success and performance etc. Once you qualify you will then be commanding a €50k price tag but to answer your question no there is not much money at all to be made in accounting realistically especially if you class yourself as a mercenary.

I would describe an accountant as a person who repeats tasks on a daily basis, earns a steady wage for themselves but not a very intellectually stimulating career.

If you love accounting try it out but if you are motivated by money accounting is not the way to make it.

Im currently up trading on the FX markets in Tokyo = ruthless mercenary :D

    Hope I helped

    Well,
There are two "sectors" of accountancy - industry and practice. Management Accountants work in industry. In practice there are a number of institutes that represent accountants - Institute of Chartered Accountants (ACA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) & Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA).
Good advice to get some work experience to see how you get on. I know alot of accountants you served their time and then went to do something completely different.
