I am in the middle of replacing the glow plugs in an 05 307 hdi 1.6,.
Got one plug out and the carbon tip stayed in the head. Any idea how i might get this out, i tried a small bit of mastic on the inside of the old plug but no joy
    Help:eek:

Did the tip of the actual plug break off?

How hard was it to pull it out?

I'm afraid it is not going to be easy to get that out. It may mean you have to remove the head

If the piston wasn't at TDC then you can forget about trying to fish it out like you have tried. i'm with Slidey on this one...

if you can still see the broken tip a vacuum cleaner might get it

soak the tip of the plug in wd40 and start the car and see will the compression blow it out

It can be done without removing the head. I've done it twice.

A telescopic magnet with a small head that will fit down where the injector is will catch it. The piston just needs to be put near TDC and knock the tip of the old plug into the cylinder. Bend the magnet a bit and make sure the head isn't coming loose so it doesn't get stuck down there.

Thats is ok if it is the old type of pintle injector. Modern injectors are quite narrow at the tip and the opening in the head is usually fairly small.

    10/10 for ingenuity though!

Both times were '05 407's. 1.6hdi. Same engine as the OP's.

It was a very small magnet!

    Good thinking so.

Hopefully he hasn't pulled the head off it. Is that a common issue with them?

The 3.0 trooper was a bit of a bastard for shearing the plugs in the head. Not the type of thing you would want to take on as a nixer..

Seems to be very common. The tip gets all carboned up and they just snap off the minute you twist the plug. You don't know it's happened 'til you get it out in your hand.

The main dealer said head had to come off!

Thanks, i tried a magnet on the new glow plug and it will not stick to the tip of the plug, the new plug is a beru make and the head is still on, although my own is nearly off

The same happened me with a 05 Kia Sorento. Tried everything but it was no use and the head had to come off in the end. Not a nice job.
Best of luck OP and let us know how you get on.
