Placement and the dole

Hi,

Doing a masters course where as part of the year we have to do our thesis on a 3 month placement.

Just after finding out that there will not be any money given to me for doing so. This leaves me in a bad state of financial affairs for the summer, as in i am already broke, my grant money has been used on rent.

So can i get the dole even though the course is running till september?

I'm in the same position - doing a taught masters but writing a thesis for the summer. I applied for Jobseekers Allowance today. The guy behind the desk told me I couldn't get it but if you look at this link, it says you can. I also have a friend writing a thesis who applied and just got it.

(d) Students completing theses/projects :
The legislation provides for disqualification while attending a full-time day course of study. Third level students who have completed final examinations but are completing theses or projects cannot be regarded as still attending a full-time day course of study and, therefore, cannot be disqualified under this provision. Entitlement may, however, be considered under the availability condition, - Section 141 (4)(c) depending on the degree of commitment to the project/thesis.
(e) Postgraduate (research) students :
Students pursuing a course at Postgraduate level by research only, who do not have fixed lectures or holidays but who work "at their own pace" until the thesis is submitted should have their entitlement examined. Each case should be examined on an individual basis to ensure that the general availability/ GSW conditions are satisfied.

I don't think you'd get JA if you are on placement as you are not available for work when on a placement.

Oops sorry thought you had done placement and were just writing the thesis about it now!

So glad I found this post!
I have dole interview tomorrow, been waiting since exams finished in May and am BROKE! I've been worrying that I won't be eligible cos I still have the thesis to hand in but that doesnt mean you aren't available for work and I am looking there is just nothing out there! So it basically says it on the website so at least I can say that if they just refuse me!

If you are available for work you can get it.

I am finishing a masters - I finished classes in April - I signed on straightaway - even though I have assignments due in in July - No problem
