    Hi all,

About 6 weeks ago, I decided to opt for 02's wireless router the Option Globesurfer iii as we have a number of different devices in the house other than the laptop that we want to be able to use other than through the usual USB dongle.

We did a trial first and were happy with the wireless reception so we signed up and bought our own router for €89. However, after about a week the wireless element stopped working consistently, and we found we had to connect it to the laptop directly with the ethernet wire. After a few days of this, I rang 02 and was told to bring it back into the shop. I did, and because I was inside 30 days of purchase they swapped the router for a new one.

Almost immediately, the new one started with the same problems. The wireless element works initially but then if we leave it running when not using any of the devices in the house (laptop, iphone, Nintendo Wii), or if we put the laptop into hibernate while the wireless is still running, when we try to connect to it again, it no longer gives out a wireless signal. We've been trying to get around this for the past week by making a point of turning off the router as soon as we've finished using it, and also shutting down the laptop entirely. This seemed to work for a time, but as of last night, having done the above, the wireless refused to work again last night, and then again this morning, meaning again, we have to plug it in by the ethernet wire which defeats the purpose of spending €89 on this router.

I've been doing a bit of research online and I've noticed a few people with similar issues but no-where seems to have any solution to the problem.

Has anyone on here bought that Globesurfer iii, and if so what is your experience of the wireless element of it?

i returned one of these for the same issue, the wifi part kept dropping out,
randomly, even a sw update didnt fix it, so in the end returned under the 7 day opt out.

signal was not great either. compass 888 worked a lot better,

Thanks for your response. Good to hear I'm not the only one having problems, although not so good as I do need the wireless element of the Globesurfer and when this works it does a great job!

Great device when it works. I have had it about 2 months.

It locks up after some time from 24hrs to 7 days. I tried all sorts with settings and different firmware settings but no luck. I am thinking it is an overheating problem.

Another problem ,of which I reported after a few days to O2, was that when you powered off the unit and pluged it back in after a while it says initializing on screen and does nothing else. You can use the LAN and Wireless no problem but trying to get onto the internet is a problem because it does not detect the sim. The only remedy is to power off the unit for at least 1hr before it detects the sim again. O2 replaced the sim at the start but this did not solve the problem. But it is rare that i Would ever get a power cut. However when it freezes every so often it is frustrating because you have to power off the unit and leave it off for an hour in order to remedy the system.

Otherwise it is a good device but needs improving. As an electronic engineer i have my suspicions about its cooling capabilities and this could be contributing to my problems.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated?

I ended up returning mine (having received 2 replacements and finding the same issue with all 3 devices!) The wireless basically picked and chose when it would work. In my case, I don't think it was an overheating problem because a lot of the time it didn't work from the time I turned it on, even though it would have been turned off overnight and most of the work day before I used it.

I had a theory that the Wifi element dropping was to do with a poor signal in the area. That when the signal was poor, the device had problems pushing the wireless element out. I never heard back from 02 about this theory.

Anyway, I've been using an 02 USB modem ever since and finding it very frustration free!!! :)

    Hi All,

I just want to share my experience of using this unit.

All I can say is that when it works, it's great, however I have had 4 occasions now where these units have damaged SIM cards. That is, the unit will be working ok one day, and the next time you power on (or even check a unit that has remained powered on and had been working ok) it cannot contact the provider. ("Initializing")

If you then try the SIM in another device or handset, it will not work, and the handset will show "Insert SIM". This to me suggests that the unit has damaged the SIM in some way. The only resolution at this point is to activate a new SIM, which in my case, was also damaged some time later.

I originally purchased 3 separate units and all have shown the same issue. I returned the first, and the replacement damaged the new SIM in the same way as well. I returned this for a USB modem, and did the same with the other 2 when they eventually failed. They are being used at 3 separate offices, so I'd rule out a mains power supply issue at any one location.

I asked O2 directly on each occasion if there were known issues with these devices, but did not recieve a response.

It's a pity as these units house a great feature set, but for my case anyway, they don't work for more than a couple of weeks at a time.

Does anyone have any further on these issues?

    Hi

I have this modem 2 week's, and I have different problem. When modem is connected in UMTS mode internet don't work. Page don't load. If I change manually to GPRS everything is ok, but internet is slow because is GPRS connection. I see that's lots of problem with this unit. I must change for new unit in O2 shop ;)
